Aladdin Spring Cleaning 6.0

With true Aladdin fashion, the makers of StuffIt bring a safe means of purging useless files from your system. Spring Cleaning 6 with its companion, iClean take charge of useless, orphaned and unwanted files, leaving your system in tact.

There are hundreds of megabytes of lingering internet files, unused resources and orphaned items on most typical Mac systems. Version 6 of Spring Cleaning includes many OS 9 tricks, such as “slimming” FAT apps, and new OS X techniques for cleaning your system.

Spring Cleaning consists of more than 21 utilities, among which are the MacUninstaller, and Font Finder. Included also are the Secure Delete digital file shredder and the file QuickCompare.

Among the more ingenious space finding methods are the new Language File finder that rids you of unnecessary language localizations. In addition to finding and isolating unwanted files, Spring Cleaning also fixes alias, examines files and reunites orphaned files with the appropriate creators.

Spring Cleaning’s Standard and Advanced Mode allow you to run a smorgasbord of utilities as one process or individual items. While some of the maintenance can be done working in the Finder, warning dialogues and sneaky deactivation and storage features make Spring Cleaning a much safer option. Spring Cleaning also catalogs changes, allowing you to go back and “fix” any applications that might not appreciate your changes.

iClean provides a quick means of optimizing your Internet browser by cleaning the cache, cookies and broken alias up. Both iClean and Spring Cleaning can be piloted from the menu bar via drop-down menus, similar to Stuffit Deluxe. I don’t know why other companies have not caught on to the menu bar like Aladdin.

There are a few missing features I would have liked to see in this update. For one, there is no support for Camino or Safari’s cache or cookie stash. Also, one key cleaning task that the shareware crowd have discovered, deleting System and application caches, is missing.

All in all, Spring Cleaning and its trusty side-kick iClean remain the safest way to scrub out useless files and polish the performance of your Mac.

Aladdin Spring Cleaning is $49.99 (iClean included)

…and now for something completely different.
