Notes from CES

Though Macworld is the Holy Grail of trade shows for the Mac, this year’s Consumer Electronics Show had some pertinent new directions in personal computing.

Here are a couple notes from my visit to CES:

While Apple did not exhibit, iBooks were a frequent sight in the hall, along with several Macs running product demos. One company’s DVD demo was clearly created in iDVD, bearing the Apple watermark and the default “Global” theme.

Peripherals made a big showing. Bluetooth was out in storm. LCD screens were all over the place.

Both HP and Microsoft had a strong “digital lifestyle” theme. Microsoft’s exhibit demonstrated that they were committed to innovation in every market they don’t yet have a monopoly. Although there was no demonstration of cell-phone integration, there were Windows powered sewing machines and watches.

Perhaps most encouraging about the show for Mac users was what was not there. Budget cuts had few companies releasing new innovative products to compete with Apple. The companies that were doing well were working in technologies compatible with Macs (like Flash memory and Bluetooth).
Note:

…and now for something completely different.
