Steve Jobs calls in sick for the next 130 or so work days

Today, Apple CEO Steve Jobs today sent the following email to all Apple employees:

Team,

I am sure all of you saw my letter last week sharing something very personal with the Apple community. Unfortunately, the curiosity over my personal health continues to be a distraction not only for me and my family, but everyone else at Apple as well. In addition, during the past week I have learned that my health-related issues are more complex than I originally thought.

In order to take myself out of the limelight and focus on my health, and to allow everyone at Apple to focus on delivering extraordinary products, I have decided to take a medical leave of absence until the end of June.

I have asked Tim Cook to be responsible for Apple’s day to day operations, and I know he and the rest of the executive management team will do a great job. As CEO, I plan to remain involved in major strategic decisions while I am out. Our board of directors fully supports this plan.

I look forward to seeing all of you this summer.

Steve

According to Fortune, after this email was made public on the newswires, the stock closed at 85.33, down 2.71% for the day, dropped another 8% when trading resumed at 5 p.m., and then ended the day at just under $80 a share.

I feel it’s important to note that Apple Inc. is a corporation. It exists to make money and profit for its shareholders. Steve Jobs, on the other hand, is a human being and is due the same respect that we would hope for ourselves.

Get well Steve.

Does Quicksilver live on in Google Quick Search?

googlething 20090112 225440 Does Quicksilver live on in Google Quick Search?Quicksilver has long been a favorite application launcher, file mover and productivity tool among Mac geeks, but back in December of 2007, a Lifehacker interview with the developer, Nicholas Jitkoff, revealed a rather bleak outlook for this beloved app. In the interview, Jitkoff encouraged Quicksilver users to start using alternatives like LaunchBar and gave little hope for Quicksilver’s future saying that the current build was destined for a long slow death and that the next incarnation would likely not be up to snuff.

Today, again from Lifehacker, I’ve learned that Nicholas Jitkoff has developed Google Quick Search, a very Quicksilveresque application that searches for files, launches applications, explores the file system to discover content and perform actions. The prototype, available for download here, is a bit rough and SBBoD’d on me very early in my testing, but shows great promise. It has much of Quicksilver’s power with the addition of Google’s search.

There may be a future for Quicksilver yet!
