Chax 2.1b1 for Leopard adds a consolidated Contacts list to iChat

Chax 20071206 192008 Chax 2.1b1 for Leopard adds a consolidated Contacts list to iChatKent Sutherland’s Chax has been updated to version 2.1b1 adding a Contacts list that consolidates all your “buddies” across all connected accounts.

Back in the Tiger days, Chax offered features like tabbed chat windows that have now been incorporated into Chat’s built-in feature set. Sutherland doesn’t appear to be backing away from Chax in the face of “competition” from iChat 4.0; rather, he has added features like “Auto-accept screen sharing requests” that take iChat’s new features to the next level.

Kent Sutherland has made Chax available for free but I’m sure he would appreciate it if you donated a little something using the PayPal link on his website.

Take the glare off of those iChat bubbles

ichat matte 2 20071121 193534 Take the glare off of those iChat bubblesOh, how far we have come. When the first iMacs came out, we enjoyed about 5 years of absolutely everything from staplers to grills coming in several translucent colors. When Mac OS X came out, it inspired the overuse of Aqua-styled text and glossy bubbles.

But now we’re moving on; those things are passe. This is evident in much of Leopard’s user interface and in a program by Joshua Bryant called iChat Matte. The program buffs the shine off your iChat dialog bubbles and makes them into simpler, subtler, colored balloons.

Bryant is careful to point out in his installer that iChat Matte overwrites default iChat files and that he takes no responsibility “if your computer erupts in flames – this most likely has nothing to do with iChat Matte and everything to do with your battery being recalled”. There is an uninstaller included as well, so worry not.

iChat Matte is freeware.
