Preview Release of Portfolio 6 for Mac OS X for Beta Users

As the press release issued today reads, “Extensis is pleased to announce a “preview release” of Portfolio 6 for Mac OS X, available for immediate download.

“The release marks the first phase of a plan to bring the entire Portfolio product line to Mac OS X over the next several months. Registered owners of Portfolio 6, which began shipping in February, will be eligible to receive a
free upgrade to the final Mac OS X version of Portfolio 6 when it becomes available later this summer.

“Meanwhile, Portfolio 6 Server for Mac OS X, which extends the image-cataloging and file-management power of Portfolio to larger workgroups, will be released next month. The Mac OS X edition of Portfolio
Server will be fully compatible with both the currently-shipping version of Portfolio 6, as well as the native Mac OS X version that will ship later.

“Extensis is making this early (alpha) release of Portfolio for Mac OS X available to the public in response to strong interest from customers who would like to begin using the award-wining digital asset management program in a fully-native Mac OS X environment, The preview version does not yet include all the features currently available in Portfolio 6, but it does
offers many fully-implemented Mac OS X features, including the ability to catalog any file, folder or disk in Portfolio using a contextual menu that appears in the Mac OS X Finder. A list of the features that are not yet
implemented in this release is included in the documentation that comes with the pre-release software.

“Extensis plans to release updates to the preview on a regular basis, and to introduce a beta version of the software within the next four to six weeks.

The Portfolio 6 for Mac OS X Preview is available now from the Extensis beta website — pre-release software is free and will expire in September 2002.”

XTensions suite includes new graphic import functions, job collection, FTP file transfer and built-in preflighting.

Extensis today announced the immediate availability of QX-Tools Pro, a major upgrade to its award winning collection of productivity XTensions for QuarkXPress. New features include the ability to import MS Excel and PowerPoint graphics and tables, and a palette that allows faster access to keyboard shortcuts. QX-Tools Pro also includes preflighting via Extensis’ revolutionary Preflight Online service.
“Whether you are using QuarkXPress 4.0 or the newly released 5.0, QX-Tools Pro will help you create high quality QuarkXPress documents with greater speed and efficiency,” said Ginna Baldassarre, QX-Tools Pro product manager for Extensis. “The collection now includes tools for power users and novices a like. ”

“Extensis is leading the charge for QuarkXPress 5.0 XTensions,” said Brett Mueller, senior product manager for QuarkXPress. “The enhanced functionality that QX-Tools Pro adds to QuarkXPress extends our shared customers ability to make the most out of QuarkXPress 5.0 by enhancing the print and web design experience.”

New Features in QX-Tools Pro:

QX-Import: Publishers can now import Microsoft Excel or PowerPoint documents without having to recreate them in QuarkXPress. Users simply import the preexisting piece into their QuarkXPress document using the QX-Import tool. Each page is imported as an EPS image with the same attributes as the print preview window in those respective parent applications. EPS files will be imported as vector EPS files allowing, for editing of those images in programs such as Adobe Illustrator.

QX-Shortcuts: For both new users and seasoned veterans of QuarkXPress, the abundance of more than 350 keyboard shortcuts can be overwhelming. QX-Shortcuts helps users expose buried shortcuts and execute those commands used most frequently. With QX-Shortcuts, users can view all shortcuts organized by category or search the entire library of QuarkXPress shortcuts for the ones they need, then create custom sets of their favorites.

QX-Collect&Send: Any QuarkXPress user that works directly with prepress or print houses can use the QX-Collect&Send tool to ensure every outgoing document has complete files. This tool collects all fonts and images (including fonts and images used in EPS files) from a QuarkXPress document, preflights the document and allows users to easily upload files to their printer’s FTP site. Users can also create shortcuts for various FTP sites for quick transmission of their job.

QX-Tools Pro includes a free, single user subscription to Extensis’ revolutionary Preflight Online service that allows users to preflight their QuarkXPress 4 jobs before sending them to the printer. QX-Tools Pro offers a limited number of standard inspection profiles that flag common output errors. A fully customizable version of Preflight Online is available to users for an additional price.

“The preflighting capabilities now available in QX-Tools Pro are so powerful that many single users won’t have to buy and install a separate preflighting application,” said Joe Schorr, senior product manager for Preflight Online. “Preflight Online will alert users to potential problems before they even close their Quark document and shows how they can be fixed.”
