The OSXFAQ online community has been hacked

Today the Mac OS X New & Support Site OSXFAQ was hacked by Chinese Mac Users.
This is the statement that was put up in the site’s forum page, which is hosted by Bob “Dr. Mac” LeVitus:

“Mac-Site gets hacked by hacker using a Mac…

I KNOW AMERICANS ARE ****, I PUT MERCY TO MAC USERS BEFORE JUSTICE AND HAVE NOT DELETE YOUR FORUMS AND USERS LIKE I DO ON WINTEL SITES!

Webmaster, if you want to know how to fix your ****** capitalist site

————————————————————————

And stop saying lies about Chinese human right abuses, you also have death sentence.

————————————————————————

Greet to cold_stone ******* to US-government, US spy plane pilots, Windows users

Congratulation to AllDas for relaunch.

Here’s what I have to say about this:

“Childish vandalism. You’d think they could find more constructive things to do with their time. Our programming team is working feverishly to get the forums back up and running. We apologize to our members and visitors for any interruption.

We hope to have the forums back on line soon. Meanwhile, the rest of the Site continues to function as usual.”

I wanted to bring this to your attention as this affects the entire Mac community.

Apple Store cracked!

We have posted a how-to article that contains directions to exploit the lack of security at Apple’s chain of retail stores. It details how to attain free software, all you need is OS X or a web host. Please post any comments concerning the article to this post, or email the author directly (in other words don’t send any mail to an @macmerc.com email address for questions or concerns). Big name security debuts on X

Symantec has officially announced Norton Internet Security 2.0 and Norton SystemWorks 2.0 for MacOS X. The packages include a myriad of features such as a firewall (there is one built into X so this seems like a lame “feature”), and the blocking of web ads (as well as pop up windows). This really doesn’t sound like a needed product… all the benefits can be attained with X right out of the box with a little Unix know-how. However if you are one of those types that always opens the email attachments titled “Something for you” you may want to check this out.
