Mover Lite …transfer pics and contacts between iPhone, iPad and Mac

Mover Lite is the FREE version of Infinite Labs’ Mover+.1

The app runs on the iPhone, iPad or iPod touch and allows you to transfer contacts and photos between your iDevices over wifi. With a 99¢ add-on to the Lite app, you can also transfer those files to your desktop Mac running Mover Connect.

If you want to be able to transfer files between your devices when they’re not connected to wifi, Mover+ allows for connectivity and transfer over Bluetooth for $1.99.

I’ve found that the app runs very well between two devices, but can get a bit confused when you have three devices, like a Mac, an iPad and an iPhone, all connected as I show in the video. It works, but confusion is a possibility.

Mover has come in handy for me many times when I just wanted to transfer a photo and I don’t want to have to go through the trouble of emailing it to myself or some other such procedure.

As mentioned in the video, the iPad stand I’m using is the BookArc for iPad from Twelve South. It’s a nice sturdy metal stand that securely holds the iPad in either landscape or portrait2 orientations. It sells for around $45.

Xtand and LogMeIn Ignition

I give credit to my buddy Brent Flink ( @indivisual ) for showing me LogMeIn and it’s super cool (and somewhat overpriced at $29.99 US) iPhone/iPad app LogMeIn Ignition.

LogMeIn is a web-based VNC service that allows you to install its free software on your Mac (or PC) and not only access, but control that computer from a supported web browser. Unfortunately, though Mobile Safari on the iPad and iPhone is one of those supported browsers, when you try to control the cursor within LogMeIn’s web-based VNC, you only end up controlling the view of the screen in the browser.

So, in order to control your Mac at home from your iPad in a coffee shop, you first need to have signed up for a FREE LogMeIn account, installed and activated the software on your Mac. Then you can share your Mac through LogMeIn. Now, when you launch LogMeIn Ignition on your iPad or iPhone, you can control your home computer from the road.

My favorite thing I’ve done with LogMeIn is use it to help me send files to clients that I couldn’t keep with me on my iPhone or iPad. While controlling my home Mac, I save the file to my Dropbox folder. This sets Dropbox to work making that file available to me online via the FREE Dropbox App on my iPad or iPhone. I still don’t actually have the file on those devices, but I can get a link to where it has been stored online by Dropbox that I can paste in an email on my iPhone and send it to my client. Problem solved.

My little joke at the start of the video below made use of a very cool iPhone stand called the Xtand.1 It’s a nice iMac-like stand that will hold the iPhone 3G, 3GS or 4. It sells for about $39.99 US2

As I mentioned at the end of the video, there is another service called TeamViewer that offers many of the same features of LogMeIn but offers FREE lite versions of its apps for iPhone and iPad …though its full-featured apps sell for $99.99 US for the iPhone version and $139.99 US for the iPad version. Suddenly, $29.99 US doesn’t seem so bad to me.

  1. I’m actually not sure if I’m supposed to pronounce it “EKS-tand” or “ztand”…clearly I chose “EKS-tand” []
  2. the one I used in the video is available for $35.99 CDN if you can get to MacStation in Abbotsford before they sell it :D []

BookBook for iPad—I SO want this

c187dd4491ac2abfc91969dc5150b59b 318x144 BookBook for iPad—I SO want this

I just posted the video on Friday of the BookBook for MacBook Pro where I alluded to the likelihood of a BookBook for iPad. And, sure enough, I get the email this morning saying it is available.

Like it’s bigger cousin, the BookBook for iPad is a handmade one-of-a-kind, hardback leather case. Since it’s for the iPad, though, it also doubles as an adjustable stand. As long as it’s going to function as a book, the iPad might as well look like a book…and a beautiful one at that. The hardback cover and spine provide impact protection, while the hard protective inner frame offers crush protection. As a bonus, the unique design of this case disguises iPad for an extra level of stealthy security.

BookBook for iPad is available in two styles: dark brown cover with black beneath ‘BookBook’ on the spine (Classic Black) and a more vibrant brown cover with red behind ‘BookBook’ on the spine (Vibrant Red) for $69.99 US.

What are you using for an iPad case. Seriously, I want to know—leave me a comment below.

Flipboard + Twitter Lists

In this video, I’m taking a look at a little known fact within a little known fact about the free media consumption app for the iPad, Flipboard:

1) You can add each of your Twitter Lists to Flipboard as a separate Sections and…

2) You can add people to your Twitter Lists that you don’t actually follow on Twitter

This means that you can group together dozens of Twitter feeds in a single list that would otherwise bog down your Twitter stream and add the list to Flipboard and read them all in Flipboard’s magazine-style format. It also means that, since most website post links to their latest articles on Twitter, you can read any such website in Flipboard as if it had its own Section simply by giving it its own list in Twitter. This can also come in handy for people who post a lot of content to Twitter, but so much so that it floods your feed and makes it overwhelming—don’t follow them, add them to a list and make them a Section of Flipboard.

    No Flash? No problem—click here!»

I don’t think I’ll be reading my main Twitter stream on Flipboard as much as I’ll be using it to consume these other sources of content—the ones I don’t actually follow.

How do you use Flipboard? Found any cool tricks? Leave a comment and let me know!!

Your iPhone and your iPad team up to help you take sneaky reconnaissance photos

EZ Cam iPhone disconnected 318x477 Your iPhone and your iPad team up to help you take sneaky reconnaissance photos

EZ Cam is a sneaky little app for the iPhone and iPad1 … and when I say “for the iPhone and iPad,” I mean it because you’ll need both.

MobAc Design came up with this $2.99 US app (EZ Cam Lite also available) that brings Remote Camera Sharing to the iDevices. You simply launch the app and make a wireless connection between any two devices using Bluetooth, WiFi, or 3G. From there, both devices can see a camera’s-eye-view in real time. Once your target is in sight, snap a picture using the controls on the iPad and the photo is taken on the iPhone and instantly transferred to the iPad for viewing.

Imagine, since this is a Bluetooth, WiFi or 3G connection being made between the devices, you can be in a totally different place than the iPhone, lying in wait with your iPad and be in full control of the camera… which is going to come in handy when you need to take that quick picture of the guy who finds your iPhone laying around all by itself and takes it for himself.

I wonder if Gary Powell was testing EZ Cam when he left that prototype iPhone 4 unattended.

Marks on your coffee table? There are coasters for that—iPhone App Coasters

iphonecoasters 370x208 Marks on your coffee table? There are coasters for that—iPhone App Coasters

I want to give a shout out to @Daynah for tipping me to these awesome iPhone Apps Coasters. I’d seen them on the periphery… I’d even seen some on Flickr… but now, for £19.99, I can see them on my coffee table. They are available in three different sets — The Core» , Home» , and Media» — each set featuring 6 of Apple’s default iPhone apps.

Do you love iPhone Apps and their icons enough to make them a part of your home decor? Leave me a note in the comments.

Two awesome apps that work awesome together—1Password and Dropbox

The folks at Agile Web Solutions just announced that on of my favorite apps, 1Password Pro, now offers synchronization of secure information using one of my other favorite apps, Dropbox. If you don’t know what 1Password is, check out this episode of MacMercTV that explains the ins and outs of the desktop version of the program.

As you can see, 1Password is a highly secure database for keeping track of web site logins, but it also handles notes, credit cards, bank accounts, and software registration information—I just didn’t have time to go into it all in the video! And, obviously, they also have an iPhone and iPad app, but the question is, how to synchronize the data across all these devices with all their different abilities and restrictions?

With the update of 1Password Pro 3.5 for iOS devices and 1Password 3.3 for Mac, the 1Password ecosystem is now fortified with fully-automated “cloud” syncing awesomeness! Using Dropbox, a free online storage service, users can securely store their data in the cloud, and synchronize their Windows, Mac and iOS devices automatically.

Now, your website logins, notes, credit cards, bank accounts and software registration information can be available on all of your Mac, Windows and iOS devices, automatically and effortlessly the way God intended.

I cannot recommend 1Password strongly enough—your passwords are the only thing between you and identity theft and this application makes it so easy to be outrageously secure while not being forced to hand-enter crazy-long passwords across the iOS’ three keyboards. They make it just as easy to be secure as it is for you to be lazy and open to attack.

1Password for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch is available in the App Store for $9.99 (USD), and the Pro version is available for $14.99 (USD). A Single User license of 1Password for the Mac is available for $39.95 (USD) and a five user Family License for $69.95 (USD). A fully functioning, 30-day trial of 1Password may be downloaded for free from Agile Web Solutions’ Downloads page.

How secure are your passwords? I’d love to hear what you think of 1Password and Dropbox in the comments.1

The Ultimate Apple Commercial Song List… iPod, iPhone, iPad and more

What follows is a comprehensive list of the songs used in the Apple iTunes, iPod, iPhone, and iPad television ads over the years. Much of the list comes from this page on Wikipedia, to which I’ve added links to iTunes for all of the songs1 and YouTube videos for most. If I have missed any, please drop me a note in the comments and I will be sure to track it down and post it.

I have always loved Apple’s advertising and the music they source is often a quiet character setting the tone of the whole ad while the gadget takes center stage. I wanted to create a spot where I could access them all in one place and I thought I’d share that place with you.

Which ad is your favorite? Drop me a comment… if you tell me yours, I’ll tell you mine.

Streaks Seinfeld-esque time management app for iPhone

themes Streaks Seinfeld esque time management app for iPhoneI love to sleep in. I sleep in so long I waste away weekends. It’s a problem and I seriously need to solve it. My goal is to get myself out of bed at 6am every morning. Yes, 6am! It’s going to be tough, but if I can get momentum, I know I can make this my routine.

That’s why I was glad when I came across Streaks – Motivational Calendar in the iPhone Apps Store. It works on the same motivational principle as Jerry Seinfeld uses to be a better comic; he writes every day and keeps tabs of his progress on a calendar. Then, after several days of consecutive productivity, if he feels a bit lazy and wants to slack off that day, a glance over at the calendar motivates him to write in order to not break the streak. The more days that are marked off on the calendar, the more of a let down it would be if you had to break that streak.

Streaks – Motivational Calendar by Fanzter is a light-weight answer to this call for your iPhone and iPod touch (and iPad if you like the zoom-mode). It provides multiple calendars to track all your goals, be they “Exercise,” “Write in My Journal,” or in my case “Get Up At 6am.” Fantzer has outfitted Streaks with four themes for your calendars (unfortunately, you must choose one theme that will be for all your calendars) and a numerical icon badge that shows you the current streak your on with the first calendar in your list.

Get a handle on your goals; download Streaks for US$1.99

What goal do you want to achieve? Please let me know in the comments…maybe we can start an accountability group ;)

Dissecting a frog for Biology class? Yup, there’s an app for that.

Available for the Apple iPad for US$4.99, Frog Dissection features a chloroformed virtual specimen, with clear instructions guiding you through the process of slicing him up. Dissection tools include pins, marker, scissors, scalpel, and forceps but, since it’s on the iPad, they are all controlled by multi-touch. Once you’ve gutted your frog, you’ll be able to view the individual organs which have been rendered for you using 3D imagery. All this without having to touch a slimy dead from or deal with those nasty chemicals.

Frog Dissection has received awards from advocacy groups like PETA for creating an effective replacement for real animal dissections. An updated version is expected soon which will have additional systems and interactive quizzes.

I’m beginning to think there really is no corner of human experience that there is not an app for… and if there is, there will be an app for that too very soon.

What’s the weirdest iPhone or iPad app you’ve found? Leave a comment and tell me about it. If I write about it, I will be sure to give you credit for its discovery.
