Follow Friday—The Blog Edition


Follow Friday is a weekly tradition on Twitter where users recommend other users for people to follow. I’ve kept up with it pretty well but sometimes I wonder if all of my Twitter friends have met each other already and if I’m not just reintroducing the same people to the same people every week. So, just to see what happens, I’m going to introduce my Twitter friends to my blog readers.

My usual method of deciding who to recommend for Follow Friday has been to go over the past week’s mentions and recommend some of the people who have reached out to me ( @rickmacmerc ) in some way and have engaged me in conversation. Conversation wasn’t the original intent of Twitter but that has certainly changed and now it’s a huge part of the experience, so I want to reward those that bring me into their circle and encourage others to do the same.

So, without much further delay, I will bring you my list. Just hover over the links for a little window from which you can get more info on these folks and give them a follow.

Flipboard + Twitter Lists

In this video, I’m taking a look at a little known fact within a little known fact about the free media consumption app for the iPad, Flipboard:

1) You can add each of your Twitter Lists to Flipboard as a separate Sections and…

2) You can add people to your Twitter Lists that you don’t actually follow on Twitter

    This means that you can group together dozens of Twitter feeds in a single list that would otherwise bog down your Twitter stream and add the list to Flipboard and read them all in Flipboard’s magazine-style format. It also means that, since most website post links to their latest articles on Twitter, you can read any such website in Flipboard as if it had its own Section simply by giving it its own list in Twitter. This can also come in handy for people who post a lot of content to Twitter, but so much so that it floods your feed and makes it overwhelming—don’t follow them, add them to a list and make them a Section of Flipboard.

    I don’t think I’ll be reading my main Twitter stream on Flipboard as much as I’ll be using it to consume these other sources of content—the ones I don’t actually follow.

    The pursuit of Mac Awesomeness

    I’ve been thinking of doing quick-and-dirty videos to accompany the stories here at MacMerc for quite a while but the first video is always the toughest. I finally got my inspiration as I was sitting in the local @Starbucks trying to post a story using their free wifi. It was taking me far too long to upload a simple story. Far, far, far too long. This was not going to work.

    I looked across the street and noticed my local Mac dealer, Mac Station, and thought, “I bet they have better wifi… I wonder if they’d let me blog from their store.” I assumed they’d want to get something out of the deal—not just let some guy leach wifi and not buy anything. That’s when I came up with the idea to offer to do those nearly-daily videos I wanted to do, but do them from their store. I help get the word out about the awesome store and their fun, knowledgeable staff and in return I get a base to blog from and a gentle nudge to get something compelling done every day.

    So here it is, the first video1 . The first video is always the toughest.
