Newton OS running on Sharp Zaurus at Worldwide Newton Conference 2006

Newton OS running on Sharp Zaurus at Worldwide Newton Conference 2006Held in San Francisco, California directly following Macworld Expo on January 13 through to the 15, 2006, the Worldwide Newton Conference included a presentation by Paul Guyot of Kallisys in which he demonstrated Einstein, a Newton OS emulator for Linux-based PDAs with X11 support. Guyot’s presentation (PDF) recapped Einstein’s development from its slow and buggy start as an emulator on Mac OS X to its current incarnation as a slow, buggy emulator running on his Sharp Zaurus SL5500. Though he says the new version run seven times faster than the previous see foresees greater speed improvements and even color in Einstein’s future.

Splorp.com’s Newton-based web server serves its 200,000th customer

Grant Hutchinson from the blog Slorp.com just announced that his Newton-based web server just tallied its 200,000th hit. The Newton web serving community works its magic using Newton Personal Data Sharing (NPDS).

Congratulations Grant on your feat of geek strength and endurance!

Newton + iPod + RSS = NewtPodcasting

Grant Hutchinson over at Splorp.com is reporting on a new and ultra geeky podcast called Green Light Go which bills itself as being “dedicated to our green friend the Newton, the eMate, all its cousins, everyone who uses, develops for and enjoys our little green friend.” It is not clear at this time whether or not it is possible to actually download podcasts to a Newton with the same ease that iPod owners enjoy, but if there is a way, the Newton community will find it.

Nintendo Entertainment System emulation for the Newton MP

And thus, the Newtendo Entertainment System is born. One somewhat outdated and nearly abandoned technology emulating another.

Stupid Newton tricks

Apple’s Newton is a great example of a well made gadget. Even though they’ve been KIA for many years, Mac-geeks are still making them do new and cool stuff. Seven Frank of Panic Software fame has his Newton checking his Mac.com email via a wireless GPRS connection fed by his Sony Ericsson P800. Why? Because he can. We salute you Steven!

Note:Make sure you check out the picture of his setup… It’s great.

The Newton Lives! RickMacMerc posts from his MessagePad 2100

Thanks in no small part to Grant Hutchinson from Newted Community, CJ Chiarizia and “Digital Bill” Douthett, I am able to make this post wirelessly via my Apple Newton MessagePad 2100. This device, which was discontinued in 1998 by Apple shortly after the return of Steve Jobs, still has a strong devoted following and continues to keep up with the times in many respects. Here’s hoping there’s as cool a PDA in Apple’s future as there is in its past.
Every experiment has its risks. Sorry, for the multiple posts. :D
