iPhoto The Missing Manual
I must admit I don’t consider myself part of the target audience for
iPhoto but after reading this book I’ll have to give it another whirl. Like
all Missing Manual series books, very basic instructions are included. Although
you may not need them—after you are done reading the book give it to someone
that could use it (like your grandparents or non-savvy friend). Not everything
is basic however, the iPhoto stunts section includes topics like plug-ins, Apple
Script, and custom screen savers.
Most people that I have talked to who do not like iPhoto complain about speed
and the file system. This book helps both those issues. It shows how to make
multiple albums to take care of speed (one for work, one for school, one for
vacation). It also sheds light on the mysterious file system (it actually has
a method to the madness).
This was written before .Mac came into play but the book doesn’t suffer because
of it. Everything is the same except you have to pay to one click publish. Alright,
well you have a few more days left on your demo but you get the point. It covers
version 1.1.1 (currently the newest version available) but the screen shots
weren’t taken in Jaguar (no big deal, Jag wasn’t around a month ago).
A section I really like but didn’t plan on being included in the book is, "Digital
Cameras: The Missing Manual". Yes, this is two whole books in one. It covers
all facets of digital cameras like: memory cards, battery life, resolution,
printing, price, and a whole lot more. After the camera goodies, comes a chapter
on taking good pictures (I think everyone needs to read this chapter before
proclaiming themselves as the vacation photographer). It details how to take
great pictures in a lot of different conditions such as: the theatre, open shade,
underwater, indoor flash, and outdoor portraits. There is a lot of great stuff
in this section and best of all it’s written for a non-photographer!
If you are an aspiring digital photographer, or just have a lot of digital photos
hanging around on your computer, iPhoto
The Missing Manual is for you!
