The Replacements

This week weÃll be looking at three apps that duplicate the function of other programs. While most of these will replace applications that are already free, you may find them valuable alternatives if the regulars fall short.

mu The Replacements httpmail plugin

This plug-in for Mail allows you to access your Hotmail account from inside Mail, similar to the way Entourage does. This project is also open-source, and is frequently updated with new features and bug fixes.

mu The Replacements eXpander

This small app is a replacement for StuffIt Expander. While it performs the same basic archive extraction, it includes several extra features including displaying an archiveÃs contents and easy drag-and-drop expanding.

mu The Replacements PDFViewer

Here we have an app replacement for Preview. While feature-wise this application does not outperform Preview, it is useful for format verification and PDF troubleshooting. IT is also quite fast and has a small footprint.

Clips– clipboard and TextExpander reinvented?

boardss 20081111 175706 Clips clipboard and TextExpander reinvented? Clips is a clipboard manager that developer Conceited Software calls, “your Mac OS X clipboard and TextExpander reinvented.” Now, I’m a huge fan of TextExpander, so Clips has a lot to live up to for me.

Clips monitors your clipboard and adds anything you copy to its panel. You can even add things to the panel by dragging them to a hot corner. Within the panel, your copied items are organized according to the application you clipped them out of and the Space you were in when you did it. Clippings can also be organized using smart folders or searched. If you find that you are constantly copying the same items again and again, you can use Clips to assign an abbreviation to the clipping (like TextExpander’s snippets) or even a full-on key command. All your clips can viewed in the organizer, the panel (a vertical “dock” of clips) or “the board” (shown here-which is kind of like Dashboard for your clipboard).

Intriguing idea.

Clips was updated today the version 1.1.3 with a few bug fixes. Registrations sell fro USD$29.99

The Escapers releases update to Flux

Flux 20080831 142236 The Escapers releases update to Flux The Escapers has announced the release of Flux 1.4, their web design application. The new version features many user-requested improvements, bug fixes and UI enhancements. Javascript support has been improved also, with support for remote scripts, and inline code in the HTML headers for better support for using third party services such as E-Junkie.

Flux is now being sold at a new price of GBPÂ£40.
