maccuffmini0308 20080324 192648 MacCuff mini makes sure thieves take your Mac and your monitorMaybe I don’t fully “get” how the “new and improved” MacCuff mini from Sonnet Technologies works, but the back-of-monitor mounting and security system for Mac minis seems to only lock the computer down to its monitor.

Sonnet says it has improved the MacCuff mini’s design so that, with the aid of a lock (lock not included) and a new steel locking bar, the device provides added security for a Mac mini when the MacCuff mini bracket is attached to the back of an LCD display.

I’m not quite seeing the added security. The Mac mini is locked to an LCD monitor and, using Apple’s largest monitor as a yardstick (even though it looks as though Apple Displays’ lack of VESA 75 or VESA 100 bolt holes makes it incompatible), securing a Mac mini to a 30″ LCD will only add about 25 pounds to the device…not enough to stop me from running off with it. And, in fact, the MacCuffs main selling point–it’s ability to reduce cord clutter by making the Mac mini and monitor a single unit–will actually make it easier to steal!

To cut the MacCuff some slack, you can use it to attach your Mac mini to your desk or something bigger, bulkier and heavier than a relatively light LCD monitor.

When Desktopple Pro first started out, it was just an aid to making better screen shots. But as users’ need to remove the clutter from their lives increased, it soon became clear that “DTP” had another destiny: as a productivity app.

While it doesn’t keep track of your “actionable tasks” or help you achieve “Inbox Zero,” it does help you achieve “Desktop Zero” by making the junk on your Desktop disappear. With the new Cover Sets feature, you can even program presets of exactly what you want to use to hide that clutter: another desktop picture, a solid color, maybe a snazzy gradient.

Do you have a bunch of Menu Bar flare distracting you from the task at hand? Desktopple Pro can dim the Menu Bar until you need to see it. Color it any color you want but bring your cursor near and it fades back into view.

For every app you have open you probably have at least one or two windows. That clutter can add up. You can put Desktopple Pro in charge of hiding those windows after a certain amount of time has passed since an app has been sitting in the background. Your current application says front and center, but those other ones you’re not currently using just hide until they’re needed.

Desktopple Pro is available as a Preference Pane application. As a convenience, a free Dashboard widget can control the DTP when the Pref Pane is closed.

Overflow is a launcher app designed to help unclutter your Dock but still allow you easy access to frequently needed applications and documents.

The 2.5 update is free for all paid Overflow customers. New customers can purchase Overflow for USD$14.95.
The major new features are:

  • Dragging a file over Overflow’s dock icon now instantly opens the Overflow window to allow the file to be dropped on an application or folder contained in Overflow, making it an even more natural extension to the dock.

  • The Overflow dock icon can now be hidden and replaced by a status menu item.
  • The Overflow window can now be automatically positioned under the mouse when the hotkey is pressed.
  • Items in Overflow can now be assigned custom names.
