Server Style

If you haven’t established your personal homestead on the Internet, it’s time. This week we’ll look at a free offer and some free server software that will furnish you with a first class home on the web.

1&1′s Free Hosting Promotion

One of the best real estate deals you’ll ever see on the Internet. 1&1 is offering a 500 MB site with support for CGI, PHP, MySQL and more. Not only is this 3 year deal real, it’s also coming to a close on January 21 so don’t think about it too long.

GoDaddy.com

This part isn’t free, but you’ll find GoDaddy as good as it gets for buying a domain. .com and .org domains start at with free forwarding, masking and email forwarding.

MovableType

This blog solution is Ben and Mena’s gem, and one of the best site management systems you can find. And, if you can install it yourself, it’s free. Manage your own blog, or tweak the system to fit your custom needs.

phpMyAdmin

If you score a site on 1&1 you’ll get a MySQL database. phpMyAdmin lets you peer into the inner-workings of you database to run queries or troubleshoot data. It’s easy enough to install and free.

We’ve only looked at a few of many great free server applications, but this ought to be enough to get you going. Have fun!

Teaching SlashDock 2.0 to pick up MacMerc.com headlines

The release of Mac OS X brought many changes not the least of which was the Dock. The Dock was designed to help users navigate and organize their system, and give instant access to your most frequently used applications, folders, and minimized windows but it was also given the option for a new type of expandability Ã³ the dockling.

This is where SlashDock comes in… err… well… it used to. You see, back in version 1.0, SlashDock was a dockling but in version 2.0 the developer saw fit to make it a stand alone application. Many devoted SlashDock users are already grieving this decision and I doubt that it will be long before we see SlashDock waddling its butt back into dockling status.

For those of you who haven’t used SlashDock before, it is a free Mac-OS-X-only application that grabs headlines from slashdot-compatible and RSS-compatible sites like MacMerc.com. In version 2.0 you are able to specify how often automatic updates are made and how SlashDock behaves when new headlines are found. To check on the headlines and read articles, simply click on SlashDock in you dock and choose your favorite site from the menu and then pick a headline. Selecting that headline will take you directly to that article in your preferred web browser. Very cool but MacMerc.com is not one of the default sites SlashDock checks. Don’t worry, we’re gonna fix that.

Setting SlashDock to read MacMerc.com

Assuming you have installed and launched SlashDock as described on the developer’s site, select Preferences… under the SlashDock menu. With the Sites tab selected, enter http://www.macmerc.com/backend.php in the field marked URL and click the + button. SlashDock will now automatically grab all of MacMerc.com’s information and add it to your “subscription list.” You will probably want to click on MacMerc.com in the list and drag it to the top where it belongs Ã³ I’ll leave that up to you.

Making SlashDock Launch at Startup

One of the problems with SlashDock no longer being a dockling is that you have to go track it down and launch it if you haven’t got your System Preferences set to do it automatically. That is easy enough to fix.

Select your Apple Menu and choose System Preferences…. From your System Preferences window, click on Login and click the Login Items tab. If you click the Add… button and navigate your way to the SlashDock application and click Open, you will have SlashDock launching and grabbing the latest MacMerc.com headlines at every startup. Life is good.

Torrent Time

BitTorrent isn’t new, and that’s good news since torrents work better with
more downloaders and better selection. Macs have been part of the community
from the beginning so its no wonder there’s some nice BitTorrent freeware.

mu Torrent Time BitTorrent

It all started here. The original BitTorrent client is frequently updated
and sports all the essential features you need to download torrents. It’s a
good place to start.

mu Torrent Time Bits on Wheels

This native cocoa torrent client includes some extras, including
comprehensive stats and a psychedelic visualizer. Like other clients you
can pause and resume downloads. You can even use Bits on Wheels to create
torrent seed files.

mu Torrent Time Tomato Torrent

This BitTorrent client packs a powerful punch (or splat, if you will) in a
streamlined, fast application. The fastest of the torrent downloaders I
tested, this is a great no-nonsense torrent solution.

mu Torrent Time TOTOTO

This free application augments Tomato Torrent, providing additional options for window placement and file download that make downloading multiple torrents easier.

mu Torrent Time Torrent Searcher X

Torrent Searcher X is a simple program that lets you search multiple sites for torrent files from a single interface. It is a great starting place in your search for torrent files.

Of course torrents can be hard to find. While you’re on the hunt, you’ll want to bookmark Torrentz.com (which searches other torrent sites) and Isohunt.com one of the more popular torrent listing sites.
