Apple runs out of cool Great Cats to use as Mac OS X codenames, demos Snow Leopard

Apple today previewed Mac OS X Snow Leopard, which builds on the success and name of OS X Leopard. According to Apple, this release focuses less on new features, and more on performance. Snow Leopard is optimized for multi-core processors, taps into the computing power of graphic processing units, enables breakthrough amounts of RAM and features a new, modern media platform with QuickTime X. Snow Leopard includes out-of-the-box support for Microsoft Exchange 2007 and is scheduled to ship in about a year.

Why did they choose such a goofy codename for Mac OS X 10.6? Well, for those of you keeping score, Apple has used the following Great Cats as code names for the various versions of Mac OS X:

  • 800px OSXBoxes 20080609 205627 Apple runs out of cool Great Cats to use as Mac OS X codenames, demos Snow LeopardCheetah = Mac OS X 10.0
  • Puma = Mac OS X 10.1
  • Jaguar = Mac OS X 10.2
  • Panther = Mac OS X 10.3
  • Tiger = Mac OS X 10.4
  • Leopard = Mac OS X 10.5

Following that Wikipedia link I provided above, you’ll see that, apart from the admittedly uninspiring “Lion,” Apple has only the Snow Leopard, and a couple varieties of Clouded Leopards to choose from for the next few OS codenames.

The new, Beach Ball of Death #2 T-Shirt sells for USD$22.90 in sizes from Small to XX-Large, but it allows you the option to choose from 14 different colors. Hopefully there will be at least one color you will feel comfortable wearing.
