Young Blood

This time I’ve good some great new stuff that will go straight to your heart, and Startup Items.

mu Young BloodJunkBroom

Use Entourage? JunkBroom provides spam filtering as well or better then any app I’ve tried, and for free. Not as fast as SpamSieve, it does have a convenient menu item and allows you to purge and backup the database.

mu Young BloodWord Plugin

From the capable author of OS X’s only (and free) PDF browser plugin comes a browser plugin that displays text from Word files. Don’t get too excited, it’s new and doesn’t read any formating. It does give you the option to save. Keep an eye on this one…

mu Young BloodDesktopManager

Even the best of us die-hards have moments of Linux envy. Mine comes from the X Windows multiple desktop support on the consol. With this menu item, you can bring multiple desktops to the Mac. Jaguar users will want to download version 0.3.2, while the Panther can go straight to 0.3.4

Well, free software has come through for us again with some indispensable utilities. Don’t forget that somebody makes this stuff. Donate where you can!

Christmas Freeware

Next week we’ll get serious with the year’s best freeware. This week we’ll relax with some just-for-fun applications.

mu Christmas FreewareeSanta

Updated from last year, this fun little app is a perfect way for your kids to email Santa. This app simulates, uh, I mean connects and sends your message directly to Santa, producing an immediate reply.

mu Christmas FreewareA Christmas Story Icons

Yes, you’ll shoot your eye out with this 7 icon set from the guys at Icon Factory. Love the movie? You’ll dig the icons.

mu Christmas FreewareXMas Lights

Add blinking lights to your desktop with XMas Lights. Chose your blink frequency and bulb type. Your string of lights will sit in the background or on top of your windows for extra holiday cheer.

mu Christmas FreewareTree.app

You don’t get much more straightforward than this. Tree is a simple Christmas tree that sits on your desktop. Lights gently pulsate to keep things interesting.

mu Christmas FreewareChristmas Tree Creator

If hands-on is more your style, try this app. You can drag-and-drop decorate your tree with lights and ornaments and then export the final product. This app will create a graphic or screensaver with your tree.

mu Christmas FreewareWreath in the Dock

Pretty much what it says – a wreath that sits in your dock. Doesn’t get cooler than this.

Can’t say I didn’t warn you. May this week’s freeware make you’re season more jolly. This is your last week to send in nominations for this year’s best of, so message me with your favorite freeware!

Happy Holidays,

Brian

Free RSS Services

This week we’ve got some useful, and of course free RSS services.

Bloglines

Upload your blogroll (as an OPML) or enter your favorite feeds manually to track your subscriptions from any internet connection. Bloglines even has a desktop client that alerts you when your feeds are updated. It might be the most pleasant way to stay on top of the news on a PC.

Feedster

Here’s another online service that can handle your blogroll. Feedster also has an RSS search engine that will let you sift through a top of new feeds.

FeedBurner

This free service, still in alpha, will let you jazz up your news feeds. It reads your existing feed, enhances it and hosts it. FeedBurner takes the traffic burden off your site and gives you additional statistics and features.

FeedValidator

The ‘net is full of outlaws, but when it comes to XML formats, you don’t want to find yourself on the wrong side of the standard. Proof your feed’s compliance and troubleshoot errors with the FeedValidator

With these tools you can once again command control of your email. Have fun.
