Yahoo! Konfabulator is Free

Now at version 2.1, Konfabulator boasts more than a thousand widgets and a strong cross-platform user base. Konfabulator now represents the only free solution for running desktop widgets for users of pre-Tiger OS X and Windows.

So, whatever your OS (provided it is not Linux) you can join in the celebration of desktop eye-candy. If you previously downloaded Konfabulator (whether you purchased it or not) all you will need to do is download and install a current version to rid yourself the the shareware nags.

Now, once installed I anticipate that you will tire of the built-in widgets – exciting as they are. The first place you’ll want to go shopping is widgetgallery.com. Part of Konfabulator’s own site, this is by far the biggest collection of Konfabulator widgets around.

For a small set of Konfabulator widgets intended to replicate the default widgets in Dashboard, stop by osx-e’s Dashboard Widgets. Studio Widgets also sports a widget directory compatible with Konfabulator.

While there are plenty of widgets to sift through, here are a few of the must-haves:

pimoverview Yahoo! Konfabulator is Free

Don’t miss the built-in PIM Overview. It shows your current calendar items and tasks from iCal and isn’t active by default. Find it stashed in your widgets folder.

systemDashboard Yahoo! Konfabulator is Free

To keep track of all your system stats, you’ll want to grab Justin Pulsipher’s polished systemDashboard widgets. If subtle is more your style, try out Ricky Romero’s compact series.

GasWatch Yahoo! Konfabulator is Free

Adrian Gonzales has a pair of very useful widgets. His Gmail notifier can hide until you have a new message. He also has a money saving widget, GasWatch, that will guide you to cheap gasoline, by zip code.

This is only the tip of the iceberg. There are widgets you can drag files to to upload them, widgets to monitor your POP and IMAP email accounts and even widgets to notify you of voicemail messages in your Vonage account.

With the Yahoo acquisition expect more widgets to come and be sure to join me next week for more free downloads.

Maximizing Studio MX

Yes, congrats to Macromedia on selling 250,00 copies of Studio MX. For those of you lucky dogs who have it, today’s downloads will make sure you’re getting the most from it. I also have something for those of you who don’t have it yet.

Studio MX

That’s right, our first free download for Studio MX IS Studio MX. Though only free for 30 days, that is one heck of a deal. With the incredible tools in MX, you ought to be able to make enough from your first project to buy it. Also, if you are a student, you can get Studio MX for the obscenely low price of $199.

Flash Player 6r60

Be sure you’re using the latest version of the Flash plugin. What difference there is between 6r58 and 6r60 I couldn’t tell you. But hey, it’s free, right?

Macromedia Extension Manager

If you have Studio MX, then the free Extension Manager is your window to the outside world. Macromedia’s Exchange is one of the most useful user communities you will ever be a part of. This site hosts hundreds of extensions for Dreamweaver and Flash. Using these extensions can expand the capability of Studio MX and save you hours of tedious programming.

So, just because you plunk down a wad on Studio MX does not mean you can’t enjoy the freebies too. And, if you don’t have Studio MX, you can download it and live a month of the good life for free.

What’s Old is New– New Updates to Old Downloads

One of the great things about the Mac software community is that there is always something new. Last week’s favorite app is so quickly replaced with this weeks cool new thing. That’s what makes it even better when that cool new thing is actually a cool old thing reborn. And those are the kind of picks we have this week.

Netscape 9 beta

Netscape has seen good days and bad, but no one can contest that it is the great-grand daddy of web browsers. So, to see it return to the Mac (v. 8 was Windows only) and in such good form (based on Firefox 2) is fantastic.

netscape9 Whats Old is New New Updates to Old Downloads

The big dog is back, and with some cool new features like the mini-browser (a sidebar that can load pages) and a handy link manager. Surprised? You shouldn’t be. Netscape was the browser that brought us tabbed browsing.

Camino 1.5

Camino is another long-time Mac must-have. Its hard to believe that Camino has been around longer than Firefox but is only on version 1.5. Good news: 1.5 adds session saving, better plugin handling and a new rendering engine.

Open Office OS X Native

Open Office is the Open Source reincarnation of Sun’s Star Office that has been around for ages. Recently, via X11, it made its way to OS X. But, if you’ve used it you know it is anything but Mac-like. A new project is underway to forge a Mac native version of the office suite. And the Alpha is ready for download.

Movable Type 4 Open Source

Remember your first blog? There’s a good chance it was powered by Movable Type. Well, Web 2.0 and blogging are well underway, and the folks at Six Apart have finally come around to releasing MT as Open Source. Actually, this is due to happen this summer, but you can download the beta today.

Ahh, memories. Truly great software never goes away for long, does it?
