The Ultimate Apple Commercial Song List… iPod, iPhone, iPad and more

What follows is a comprehensive list of the songs used in the Apple iTunes, iPod, iPhone, and iPad television ads over the years. Much of the list comes from this page on Wikipedia, to which I’ve added links to iTunes for all of the songs1 and YouTube videos for most. If I have missed any, please drop me a note in the comments and I will be sure to track it down and post it.

I have always loved Apple’s advertising and the music they source is often a quiet character setting the tone of the whole ad while the gadget takes center stage. I wanted to create a spot where I could access them all in one place and I thought I’d share that place with you.

Which ad is your favorite? Drop me a comment… if you tell me yours, I’ll tell you mine.

Accessorizing Entourage

Well tomorrow marks one month until the scheduled release of Microsoft’s Entourage Palm conduit. In commemoration of this I decided to feature some of my favorite Entourage add-ons.

Mail Pictures

Another great “does what it says, says what it does” freeware marvel. This is a little AppleScript drop box that takes the dropped image, and after you specify the max width or height in pixels, it attaches the image to a new message. Not rocket science, but the size-limiting feature is a good way to keep your file size down. This little app comes in two flavors, one built to work with iPhoto, and another built for Graphic Converter.

SpamReporter Script

The next two items are AppleScripts to add to Entourage’s “script menu”. Drop it in the “Script Menu Items” folder in the Microsoft user data directory. After adding your scripts to the folder they show up on the menu

When executed, “SpamReporter” moves the selected “spam” message(s) to the trash, but first forwards them on to uce@ftc.gov, a bunch of government folks paid to eat up spam (and analyze it). If you have a free “SpamCop” spam-reporting account, you can configure the script to send it there for reporting.

Delete Completely for Entourage X

Making up for an annoying missing feature in Entourage, this script completely deletes messages, bypassing the trash. No more double deleting with this convenient addition.

Queue Sync

Next month may be find this freeware absolute. Still in beta, Queue Sync came on the scene months before the promise of a Microsoft-made conduit.

conduit Accessorizing Entourage

What this conduit lacks in finesse and speed (it’s slow) it makes up for in features. Destine, according to the website, to become shareware, Queue Sync syncs your Palm device’s todo’s, addresses, appointments, notes and even email. A great find for anyone with Entourage X and a Palm device, this app is completely useless to everyone else.

For those of you that don’t have Entourage and instead use Apple’s free (and not too shabby) Mail.app, here’s a freebee called “MailSwitcher“. It allows you to share your Mail app with another user without loging out.

Tune in next week for another set of freeware that exploit a little-know feature of OS X. Until then, keep it real,

Brian

Create your own Icons, Free

Icons have illustrated Macintosh desktops as long as they have been around. Now with OS X and the advent of 128×128 icons, you can squeeze even more detail into your icons. After all, if you couldn’t customize it, it wouldn’t be a Mac.

mu Create your own Icons, Free Icon2PNG

Before we get into creating icons of our own, we’ll look at converting existing icons into something we can edit. Icon2PNG extracts icon resources (OS X and classic) and saves them with their masks as PNG files. This app also gives us a preview of the icon before saving it and includes more options in the preferences.

mu Create your own Icons, Free Iconverter X

This program will allow us to create icons from the contents of graphic files or their thumbnails. Iconverter can even batch convert a whole directory. Once converted, it saves your icon as a Mac icon file, Windows icon or one of several graphics formats with the icon set as the documents thumbnail.

mu Create your own Icons, Free Pic2Icon

Here’s another free application that will make you a proud icon creator. Pic2Icon uses an image file to create a 128×128 icon and them applies it to the original image file. Settings allow you to apply antialiasing, drop shadow and even a dog ear to the icon. Be careful with Photoshop image files, as this app has a hard time replacing existing thumbnail icons. You can use Preview to save a “clean” version to process.

mu Create your own Icons, Free icon2ico X

Now that you’ve created some killer icons, share them with your Windows friends. This simple drag-and-drop app translates Mac icons to the Windows ico format. This is also a useful conversion if you are making favicons for your web site.

Now you have the tools to plaster your system with custom icons, you have nothing but your own nepotism to hold you back! I’ll be back again next week with more great free downloads…
