Leopard Preview

Apple has a slew of improvements in store for the next version of the most advanced operating system. I think we can agree that no one does it better than Apple, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get close.

Check out these free applications that will add some very Leopard features to your Mac today.

Better Backup (Time Machine)

Backity

Prove Steve wrong and back up on a regular basis with this Tiger-only app. Backity gives you easy access to your most important files.

Backuplist+

If you’re still using Panther, Backuplist+ makes a great backup choice. This application includes backup scheduling. You define which folders are backed up.

Virtual Desktops (Spaces)

VirtualDesktops

VirtualDesktops is an advanced virtual desktop manager with advanced capabilities (including Parallels support). This application has a slick interface and is updated frequently. Tiger only.

Desktop Manager

This is the project VirtualDesktops was based on. This Panther compatible desktop manager lives in your menubar and supports on screen notifications.

Text to Voice (VoiceOver)

Vox Machina

Sure it doesn’t come close to the voice quality of Leopard’s new VoiceOver feature. But this free application will read you text or save it to an audio file. Great for turning text to iPod edible audio clips.

Search and Launch (Spotlight)

Quicksilver

The new Spotlight will feature better application launching. Quicksilver already launches applications with a few keystrokes. This advanced search and launch system has made junkies out of its users.

Mail Turned PIM (Mail)

Note To Self

With Leopard you won’t have to do it, but one of the easiest and most effective ways to manage your tasks is to email them to yourself. This tiny application makes it easier and faster.

Chandler

Leopard’s Mail will let you quickly turn an email onto a task or note. So does Chandler, a unique personal information manager. Chandler managers tasks, calendar items, notes and mail in one place with a tagged, integrated approach.

Let that tide you over till Leopard is let lose. Happy downloading.

Top 10 Free Applications for Making Top 10 Lists

It seems like you can’t go more than a few hours without some new list popping up on Digg or showing up on some editorial hit list.

Where do all these great, or not so great ideas come from? I’m not sure, but I can tell you this: they don’t make it to the web without some help. So let’s go.

Start with some OPML outlining in MyMind.

Next, flesh out your concept by laying it down on xPad, a powerful free text organizer.

Break out your tasks and get them done with iGTD, an integrated task tool.

Prep your list for the web using Screen 0.2 to format your lists in HTML.

Check Off your task list from the menu bar with a simple, easily accessed task management tool.

Post your progress to Twitter (so your fan club can keep up) with Twitterrific

Document your sources of inspiration by making a list of your books with Books.

Ready for prime-time? Post your final product to your Blog Thing.

Save your blog post link to URLwell on your menu bar (to go back and check your hit-count).

Now, kick back and wait for the advertiser’s checks to roll in. Why not spend some of your new wealth on vintage Mac hardware with the eBay Firefox Companion.

Like the list? Add it to your own.

Software Update

Updates are almost as inevitable as inertia. And with the new features they bring, we should appreciate them. Some of the best freeware has become even better.

mu Software UpdateCamino

A favorite of mine, this Mozilla browser has matured to version 0.8b which includes a Safari-esque search box on the menu bar and a new bookmark interface. If you are brave enough to edit your .plist, you can add all kinds of search engines (in addition to Google and Google images) to the newly added box. The new theme isn’t to shabby either.

mu Software UpdateImageWell

This tiny app has always been big on image handling features. In version 2 it adds watermark and drop shadow support in addition to a slew of new image modifying and server options.

mu Software UpdateNetNewsWire Lite

Version 1.0.9b1 of what is probably the best news reader for the Mac introduces support for Atom feeds. If you follow blogs published on Blogger, you’ll want this update.

That’s the latest from these fine free applications. Come back next week for another set of freeware’s best.
