In Canada, due to our earlier harvest, we celebrate Thanksgiving in October. So, just as soon as we’ve stopped remarking, “Can you believe the summer is over already?” we start into marveling at the fact that it’s time to think turkey and stuffing.

In this visit to Urban Rush, I demonstrate five iPad apps that will help you get into the Thanksgiving spirit (does every holiday have a spirit?). I’ve got something to help you work your gratitude muscle, another to help you find the perfect Thanksgiving side dish, an app to help you pair the meal with the right wine, one to help you make sure you don’t burn the turkey and finally one to keep you from getting sick eating leftovers that are way past their prime.

VIDEO: Windows Management with Divvy

Divvy 318x278 VIDEO: Windows Management with Divvy As boring and uninspiring as managing onscreen windows is, Divvy from Mizage makes it dead sexy. I know Mac OS X has Spaces and Exposé and I was all excited about those before they came out too but, now that I have them, they drive me crazy. Spaces I just have turned off and Exposé, though it helps me every so often when I lose a window, is just not a part of my geek utility belt as much as I had envisioned.

Divvy, on the other hand, does what I need doing and does it well. I can tell it, “I want this window to take up exactly 4/7 of the left side of my screen and I want this other window wit take up the other 3/7.” Heck, I can even tell it to make them overlap a bit. All I have to do is summon Divvy’s little window, drag and draw the area on the miniature screen it shows and the window snaps into submission.Then I can save those dimensions and setups to Divvy’s shortcuts menu and reduce the whole procedure down to summoning Divvy’s window and hitting a shortcut key.

Divvy does suffer from some logistical problems with complicated application interfaces like Adobe Photoshop, where there are windows and palettes and multiple navigation bars, but it does work—you may have to adjust the grid in Divvy’s Appearance tab to get better handling around the toolbars. Divvy is fabulous and sells for $14 US.

The pursuit of Mac Awesomeness

I’ve been thinking of doing quick-and-dirty videos to accompany the stories here at MacMerc for quite a while but the first video is always the toughest. I finally got my inspiration as I was sitting in the local @Starbucks trying to post a story using their free wifi. It was taking me far too long to upload a simple story. Far, far, far too long. This was not going to work.

I looked across the street and noticed my local Mac dealer, Mac Station, and thought, “I bet they have better wifi… I wonder if they’d let me blog from their store.” I assumed they’d want to get something out of the deal—not just let some guy leach wifi and not buy anything. That’s when I came up with the idea to offer to do those nearly-daily videos I wanted to do, but do them from their store. I help get the word out about the awesome store and their fun, knowledgeable staff and in return I get a base to blog from and a gentle nudge to get something compelling done every day.

So here it is, the first video1 . The first video is always the toughest.
