PC Survival apps

Stranded on a PC at work or home? Well if you have no way of escaping Windows, here are a few downloads that will minimize the pain.

Trillian

The first thing youíll want to do is get connected to your friends. Unfortunately there is no iChat or Fire for Windows. What they do have is Trillian. This chat app supports AIM, Yahoo, MSN, ICQ and IRC. This will keep you chatting with all your iChat buddies.

Mozilla Calendar

Rely on iCal for your daily schedule? Though you could use an online .ics browser to view your calendar, itís worth downloading the Mozilla add-in Calendar. With it you can subscribe to online iCal calendars and manage your own iCals. Be warned, it is still under development.

Phoenix

Miss Safari or Chimera? If Mozilla isnít your style, there is a budding new alternative to Internet Explorer. Phoenix is another Mozilla project, like Chimera. It does come in a Mac version, and while it isnít quite Chimera, it does support pop-up blocking and tabbed browsing.

Amphetadesk

Of course, youíll want to keep connected to the world of Mac. Amphetadesk will allow you to subscribe to RSS feeds from your favorite sites (like this one).

Thanks for joining me for todayís look at free software. For those of you stuck on PCís I hope todayís featured freeware makes your stay more comfortable. As for me, Iím glad Iím done and can get off this thing.

Until next week,

Brian

Beyond iCal

iCal is more than just an iApp, it’s a new standard for calendar sharing. Extend your calendaring with these free applications.

mu Beyond iCalCalendarUpload

iCal will upload calendars to .Mac and WebDAV accounts, but CalendarUpload will upload iCal calendars to your FTP server. This freeware pick requires Panther.

mu Beyond iCaliCal FTP X

This app does pretty much the same thing, but works on Jaguar. Calendars uploaded to web-accessible directories can be subscribed to in iCal.

mu Beyond iCaliCal2blog X

This free script posts your iCal items to your blog via XML-RPC. It’s a gift from Ben and the folks at Movable Type.

mu Beyond iCalPHP iCalendar

This unique server-side solution parses iCal’s .ics files into a web-readable form. A great way to view your iCalendars online.

Mozilla Calender and Sunbird

This little known Mozilla project produces an extension for Firefox/Mozilla/Thunderbird that adds an iCal-compatible calendar. Also available as a stand-alone application called Sunbird, this app/extension can read, write and sync .ics calendars via FTP or WebDAV.

With this week’s tools, you’ll be able to take your iCals far beyond the desktop, and do it for free.

New Year’s Calendars

Happy New Year! Get your first resolution resolved with a new calendar solution. Below we’ve got all kinds of solutions – all of which are free.

mu New Years CalendarsChandler

This ambitious Open Source project is fresh and innovative. Chandler can quickly turn mail into tasks and tasks into calendar items. Chandler can sync with a WebDAV server and process your IMAP or POP email.

chandler New Years Calendars

The interface and organizational ideas in this solution are some of the best I’ve seen, but this application is new and not fast or feature-complete.
It may not be ready for prime-time, but the ideas behind it are exciting, and good things are in store for the project.

mu New Years CalendarsRevolver

Not unlike Chandler, this is an all-in-one mail, task, calendar solution. The unified interface makes it easy to manage your info in one place. The application is slick and easy to use, but does not sync with iCal.

revolver New Years Calendars

There are some German interface glitches, and the import/export functions are crude (delimited data files) but it is fast and easy to use.

HipCal

This web-based calendar/todo solution has a great interface and flexible features. It promises iCal sync in the future. HipCal imports contacts and also includes email alerts and repeating events/tasks.

Mozilla Sunbird

This stand-alone project spun off from Mozilla Calendar has hatched a new version, 0.3 alpha. The daring will find it full of extra features like file attachment and advanced scheduling.

mu New Years CalendarsPreminder

This Mac-only app has a very interesting interface, with unique display options.

preminder New Years Calendars

It’s more attractive and accessible than most alternatives, and imports/exports iCal calendars.

mu New Years CalendarsMail2iCal and Mail2iCalToDo

These two AppleScripts allow you to easily create calendar and task items from mail messages in Mail.app. Many of us use our inboxes as todo lists, now we can actually turn mail into events and tasks.

That’s it for our free calendar round-up. Stay organized this year, and make free software a resolution fo 2006.
