It does this utilizing an IEEE1394 PHY and optical transceiver (yeah I don’t understand that either–but 10,000 meters!!). The FireNEX800-SX is contained within a small box slightly larger than an iPod, which makes it unobtrusive and compact, allowing you to place it on a desktop already crowded with other things.

EDGE Tech announced today the release of a 400GB 3.5″ portable hard drive. This is latest addition to the company’s DiskGO! portable drive product line and the largest capacity offering to date from EDGE. The company’s entire line of DiskGO! 3.5″ portable hard drives support USB 2.0 and FireWire (IEEE-1394) interfaces and are available for sale at all of EDGE’s reseller and distribution partners. In addition to the new 400GB capacity, this product is also available in 80GB, 120GB, 160GB, and 250GB capacities. The 400GB portable drive will have a MSRP of USD$349.99 after manufacturer’s mail-in rebate

OWC ships the first 100GB models of its pocket-sized Mercury On-The-Go drives

Other World Computing (OWC) has begun shipping its first 100 Gigabyte Mercury On-The-Go portable storage solutions, available immediately online starting at $319.97.

The 5400RPM Mercury On-The-Go drives feature 8 MB of cache and are available with either a FireWire only interface or with both FireWire and USB interfaces. The IEEE1394/iLink-compliant FireWire interface on the 100GB On-The-Go solution supports both a powered (6-pin) and an unpowered (4-pin) port. Conversely, the USB interface on the combination FireWire/USB 100GB On-The-Go external hard drive supports both USB v2.0 and v1.1. This is the largest capacity portable storage drive OWC has offered to date.
