MacBidouille/Hardmac Wireles N hack gets a thumbs down from Apple

Apple is obviously aware of the Airport hack posted to MacBidouille/Hardmac last week. The hack showed how users of Core Duo Intel Macs could use the Airport card from the Core 2 Dup iMac to get up to speed with 802.11n.

In a report circulated by Apple today, this maneuver is relegated to the “how to void your warranty” file.

The AirPort Extreme Card sold for use in Mac Pro and some iMac computers is not supported in any other products and could cause damage if installed in them. Because of this possibility, the AirPort Extreme Card is not a Do-It-Yourself (DIY) part and requires installation by Apple Authorized Service Providers (AASPs).

So basically, you can’t install it yourself under warranty, nor can an Authorized Service Provider install it for you. Buy a new Mac. icon wink MacBidouille/Hardmac Wireles N hack gets a thumbs down from Apple

Some well produced ”Get a Mac” spoofs

My former co-worker, Laurie McGuinness, wrote and directed a trio (Now a quartet -Ed.) of “Get a Mac” spoofs that are by far the best I’ve seen. I know, as a “Mac Fanboy,” I’m supposed to feel insulted by these, but I can’t help conceding that they are very well done. They spoof Macs and the Mac culture without resorting to stupidity.

I also have to admit that I have always been partial to Laurie’s writing and am a bit biased in that regard. But now I’m wondering if somehow he used me as the basis for his pathetic, penniless Mac character…. hmmm…. back to feeling insulted again…

Says McGuinness ,

“It’s not an anti Mac thing, it’s those smug friggin’ ads. Yes, Mac is cool. I have an iMac I love. But in the real world, Mac works for PC. PC has money, and power. Just a different look is all. There’s a fourth spot we’re just wrapping up, and it’s on the DRM Fairplay thing.”

I’ve embedded the YouTube videos beyond the “read more.”

Note:UPDATE: The fourth spot that McGuiness alluded to, entitled “Music,” has now been posted and can be seen after the “read more” also.

Quicky USB Transceiver available for iMacs

366528307 6f37acefcc m Quicky USB Transceiver available for iMacsQuickerTek announces the introduction of a new Quicky USB Transceiver for wireless iMac networking. This device provides up to ten times the wireless performance of any USB iMac with 500 milliwatts of RF power. Quicky easily attaches to the USB port only–and can even be powered
from USB (an AC adapter is included for maximum flexibility).

New updates to Quicky design include four high-visibility LEDs for transmit, receive, power and link. The new external case design also distinguishes this new Quicky USB Transceiver. In addition to the 500mW of RF power, Quicky includes a 5dBi antenna which is not only more powerful than the internal antenna, but it also is positioned up and out of the confines of the iMac case.

Quicky temporarily clips to the top of the iMac case. It requires no skills to either set up or use. Quicky works with all 802.11/b/g WiFi equipment including Apple AirPort and AirPort Extreme–even the new one just announced at Macworld Expo. Quicky works with all AirPort-equipped iMacs and requires no software drivers.

The Quicky for iMac sells for USD$225 USD.
