Below follows our live play-by-play coverage of WWDC 2005. Apple officially announced plans to switch to Intel chips and dump PPC.
Watch the keynote address video stream
02:10 PM – Show over, no iBook updates. Please remember to tip a few dollars (cheaper than a movie!) to help us pay for the server. Thanks guys, it was fun! – Jon Gales
02:05 PM – After the speech check out CNBC for an interview with Steve Jobs.
02:05 PM – No words on how Apple will get people to still buy Macs with PPC… We’re still a year from that launch.
02:01 PM – Intel is most about relentless advancement of Moore’s law.
02:00 PM – Worlds most innovative computer company, Intel calls Apple. Teamed with worlds most innovative chip company. Self love!
02:00 PM – Intel CEO was on stage, with a hug.
01:59 PM – Site back up, sorry about that. All up on a new server. Thanks Pair!.
01:59 PM – Read the Apple on Intel press release
01:49 PM – Developers can lease a G5 Tower with Intel inside for $999 that can be kept until launch… 3.6ghz p4.
01:48 PM – Steve’s demo machine is running Photoshop and MS Office. Appears fast.
01:46 PM – Rosetta is the name of the rumored emulator. Runs PPC apps on Intel. Since not every app will be Intel compatible on day one… Transparent, not like Classic. No mention if Classic will still be supported.
01:38 PM – If you’re interested, please click send a buck or two via PayPal. The load is huge!
01:38 PM – Universal binary will support both PPC and Intel in one app. Much easier than “carbonization”. Wolfram Research did it quickly for Mathematica (secretly). Just got the message on Wednesday.
01:37 PM – Xcode 2.1, key for development on Intel.
01:36 PM – Tweaks should be a few days for Cocoa, few weeks for Carbon.
01:35 PM – Second challenge: getting your apps to run on Intel. Cocoa: small tweak, recompile, works. Carbon + xcode: tweak, recompile, works. Carbon + metroworks: move to xcode, tweak, recompile.
01:34 PM – Stock watch: AAPL on the upswing.
01:32 PM – Steve Jobs’ demo Mac for his speech: P4 3.6 gigahertz!
01:31 PM – Challenge: Making OS X dance on Intel. Every release of OS X has been compiled for both PPC and Intel for last 5 years! WOW! Audience goes nuts.
01:30 PM – Reasons for the switch: 3 gigahertz missed, no G4 powerbooks, better performance. Future of ppc is 15u performance per watt. Intel 70u per watt. We should see Intel Macs in about 1 year.
01:27 PM – HOT Here comes Intel: talking about processor transitions now – from 68k to PC. Apple is switching to Intel from PPC. “Time for a brain transplant.” 2006-2006 cited.
01:26 PM – Leopard is the next release of Mac OS X.
01:25 PM – We apologize about the downtime–thanks to the Intel rumor, this is the most watched WWDC in recent memory. Our host, Pair Networks, is working hard on keeping the site up.
01:21 PM – 2 million copies of Mac OS X Tiger were sold in the first 6 weeks (16% of user base). Steve says the number should hit 50% next year. Fastest sales for an OS release ever. Read off lots of mainstream reviews–all positive of course.
01:18 PM – QuickTime 7 out for Windows starting today (how about fixing the bugs in QT7 for Mac?). Steve says QuickTime has been shipped over a billion times!
01:17 PM – Enough of iTunes, onto the Mac: Mac unit growth started 9 months ago. Outpacing PC growth.
01:14 PM – iTunes: 430M songs sold so far. New features: Podcasting. “Anyone can make it and get worldwide audience.” New music Tuesday will have its own Apple made podcast.
01:13 PM – iPod: 16m as of end march with 76% market share of all music players
01:07 PM – 1 million visitors a week to the Apple stores.
01:06 PM – Fashion note: Steve is wearing dark pants, not jeans. It’s also snowing in hell.
01:05 PM – Largest WWDC in 10 years (anyone bet there was a surge in ticket sales over the weekend?)
01:04 PM – It’s showtime: lights dim, music ends, Steve Jobs on stage. “Important day, great stuff”
01:01 PM – Reader report: .Mac is down for ‘maintenence’
12:58 PM – Few minutes to showtime and the Online Apple Store has no post it note–perhaps no new shipping products today?
12:55 PM – Listening to the music selection: daft punk playing now, following vertigo. (still waiting for the Blueman Group… heh)
12:09 PM – Coverage due to start in less than an hour, 10AM PT.
