We know life tends toward chaos, and so does your Mac. Reign in the disorder with these free downloads.

mu Spring CleaningEole

As creative as its name, Eole gives you a one-step cleanup that will sweep documents away to your Home directories (Music, Movies) based on their file type.

Keep your Mac’s inner-workings in top shape with this AppleScript Studio app. From maintain1 you can run all kinds of maintenance tasks built in to OS X’s UNIX roots.

Use a MySQL database on your Mac or a remote server? This handy little piece of freeware makes it easy to download and backup your MySQL databases using the mysqldump command.

mu Spring CleaningAccounts Enhancer

Wish there was an easier way of changing “short” user names? Accounts Enhancer makes this easy for Panther owners.

mu Spring CleaningMailDeliveryTool

Clean up your outgoing mail with this free tool. MDT keeps your “from” email addresses straight, so you can be sure to email associates from your work address and friends from your personal one.

Get it Together

This week we have some odds and ends that will help you tie up loose ends.

mu Get it TogethersterMachine

This multi-purpose utility gives you a GUI to all kinds of OS X maintenance tasks including cleaning caches, running cron jobs and creating invisible files. This app comes in Panther and Jaguar flavors.

mu Get it TogetherCocoazip

Zip, gzip and tar files to your heart’s content. Oddly enough, Cocoazip doesn’t untar or unzip, but I suppose there are other utilities for that.

mu Get it TogetherFirefoxy

Firefoxywidgets Get it Together

Love Mozilla Firefox, but not so much the windows-looking submit buttons and drop-downs? Swap your widgets for sleeker ones with Firefoxy (shown above).

WebAddressBook

Here’s a nice extra for those of you who’d like to access your addresses from the web. WebAddressBook uses PHP and MySQL to provide password-protected access to your contacts. This server based system easily imports group vCards exported from OS X’s Address Book.

I think we found something for everybody in this mix. Until next week, have fun!

Yasu 2.0.6 released for OS X 10.4

Jim Mitchell has released version 2.0.6 of the Mac OSX maintenance utility Yasu for OS X 10.4 (Tiger).

Designed to be a quick first line of defense for solving OSX related issues, Yasu was originally developed with System Administrators who service large groups of workstations in mind, enabling them to perform a specific group of maintenance tasks quickly within a few clicks, rather than endlessly typing shell script commands in the Terminal application.
This Tiger specific release addresses the following issues, and is a recommended update for all users:

  • A time-out to version checking if a user isn’t online.
  • Better validation for improperly entered registration information.
  • Donate menu now gets disabled once the application is registered.
  • Other minor under-the-hood (code) tweaks.
