Map It

Don’t we all just want to find out place in the world? With this week’s picks we’ll turn address into maps and more.

blue Map ItMap Address Book addresses via Google Maps

This one comes courtesy of MacOSXHints.com: These are two AppleScripts that let you shoot addresses from the Address Book to the new (beta) Google Maps service. The scripts run inside the Address Book, from a contextual menu. This script requires Firefox (as Safari isn’t supported by Google Maps).

mu Map ItGetDirections

This is a similar plug-in for the Address Æ’aBook. It lets you select an address and get directions to or from it to another location. It also works through a contextual menu and requires Panther.

mu Map It93 Photo Street

This unique application lets you arrange photos by location. The program can download street maps for you and allows you to search for an address to mark the location of your pictures. This requires Panther.

mu Map ItBeholder Lite

This free program gives you an interface for searching out graphics on the web. Beholder can also scan your hard drive and iPhoto library for the image you’re looking for.

mu Map ItWeather Maps

Now, back to maps: Weather Maps downloads, well, weather maps for your selected region as jpegs.

blue Map ItMapIt! Firefox Extension

One more: this Firefox extension adds a MapIt option to your contextual menu, allowing you to find an address in selected text. I supports MapQuest, Yahoo! and Maps.com maps.

Well, I hope we’ve all found something or somewhere we were looking for. If, stop in next week for a new set of downloads. Looking for something in particular? Email your suggestion to brian AT macmerc DOT com.

Google Maps

When Google comes to town, the bar on usability goes up. The same is true to online mapping. Google’s open API opens up a great opportunity for developers.

Greasemap

Combine Greasemonkey with the power of geocaching and you get Greasemap. This user script scans pages (content and source) for geographic information.

greasemap Google Maps

Once found, Greasemap displays an alert bar in your browser. Click it and a Google Map is shown at the top of the page with the location(s) mapped. Greasemap can digest geo tags (like those from Flickr), geo meta information and street addresses.

Google Maps Widget

You saw this one coming. Browse locations without a browser and map contacts from your Address Book from a handy fly-out list. Perfect for easy-access to Google Maps (including satellite maps).

Google Sightseeing

Sometimes you’ve got no destination in mind, but have the disposition to wanter. This site is a great way to see the world from your Mac (and from the top).

googlesightseeing Google Maps

This site features interesting locations, satellite map anomalies and background on what you’re seeing. Google Sightseeing has everything from really big letters to whales to airplanes and boats all organized by subject and region.

Google Maps Plugin

This plugin for your website gathers your visitors’ locations from their IP address and plots them on a small Google map. Sure it’s just a novelty, but it is a pretty cool way to welcome visitors.

Virtual Earth and Google Maps

This is an interesting side-by-side comparison of Microsoft’s Virtual Earth side by side with Google Maps. This lets you browse both simultaneously. The site keeps the two in sync while you pan and zoom. Nice.

Google Maps from your Address Book

There are two plugins that add Google mapping options to your Address Book. Check them out here and here. Both will allow you to launch Google Maps related to your contacts’ location.

Tools to get you where you’re going, find out where they’re from and enjoy yourself going nowhere. Make a point of finding your way back here for another Freeloader Friday!

Google Maps Redux

The advent of the Google Maps API has had programmers the world over calling in sick to their day jobs. Fortunately, you don’t have to be a code genius to take advantage of Google Map’s developer features.

Mapki

Rather than build up to the big one, I’ll just pop this one in up-front. This Google Maps wiki has everything from related services, code snippets and documentation on Google Maps.

Maps.Huge.info

I don’t know if these Google Maps are huge, but they are handy.

gmapzip Google Maps Redux

Enter a zip code and you’ll get a map of its boundaries. Click anywhere on the map and the zip code the point resides in will be drawn for you.

Google Maps EZ

Interested in making your own Google Maps? Google Maps EZ will let you add Google Maps to your own site with nothing more than some HTML. You get to host your own maps with a few lines of provided code that loads JavaScript from Google Maps EZ.

gMapTrack

If you don’t mind so much where you map is hosted, and particularly if you have a lot of points to plot, gMapTrack is for you. This free service lets you upload locations via XML or CSV and has flexible plotting options. You can keep maps private or make them public. All without thinking about code.

Flash Earth

Now, for one last map browsing experience, check out Flash Earth.

flashearth Google Maps Redux

You can browse the world in Flash with Google Maps or MSN Virtual Earth. Can you see me?

There you go, more mapping fun. Join me next week for more great freeware and free web services.
