Apple posts iPhoto 6.0.6 Update. Protects from nasties in photocasts.

Apple posted an update to iPhoto today bringing the digital photo management software up to version 6.0.6. Software Update is a bit tight lipped about what the update offers, giving a trite…

This update to iPhoto addresses issues associated with EXIF data compatibility and Photocasting.

Digging a little deeper to the related support document, we read…

Impact: Subscribing to a maliciously-crafted photocast may lead to arbitrary code execution

Description: A format string vulnerability exists in iPhoto. By enticing a user to subscribe to a maliciously-crafted photocast, a remote attacker can trigger the vulnerability which may lead to arbitrary code execution. This has been described on the Month of Apple Bugs web site (MOAB-04-01-2007). This update addresses the issue by performing additional validation while handling photocast subscriptions. Credit to Kevin Finisterre of DigitalMunition for reporting this issue.

Evidently, the new update protects iPhoto users from being taken over by a malicious photographic “nasty-cast.” Stay safe, kids–update and don’t subscribe to the photocasts of strangers.
