Filmmaking Freeware

Macs and video go way back, and creating and converting quality video has never been easier or cheaper. Do more with your video with this week’s free tools.

blue Filmmaking Freeware Gumby

Not just a claymation character anymore. This hidden gem is a swiss-army knife of MPEG and more. Fix, split or convert MPEG’s and build VCD’s. Pretty well documented, the only thing you’ll miss with this free package is Pokey.

mu Filmmaking Freeware myVCR

Schedule your Mac to record clips from a video source. Useful for setting up captures when you’re not around. Settings let you limit duration and set minimum hard drive space to leave free.

mu Filmmaking FreewareDirectors Boards

This interesting app combines story-boarding, audio annotation and presentation for digital directors. This tool is ideal for planning films with the ability to attach graphic files to story-board and organize digital clips.

Now that we’ve got budget taken care of there’s nothing between you and your masterpiece. Don’t get too dangerous.

I’ll see you next week with more free software.

Apples and Oranges

This week we have a nice collection of software you may have missed, including a generous bunch of apps from Freshly Squeezed Software.

SpellBound

This SourceForge project brings spell checking to Firefox. The extension requires .92 and adds spell checking to any text area with a right-click. Unlike past solutions, this requires no tweaking of config files.

Gentoo MacOS

This is one for the geeks. This new alpha software brings the Gentoo Linux package manager Portage to OS X. Similar to Fink, this app promises to bring Linux packages prepared for OS X to your Mac. As you may have guessed, there isn’t much available now.

PulpFictionLite

Freshly Squeezed offers a feature-trimmed version of its new RSS reader. This RSS reader is worth checking out for its unique mail metaphor and article sorting features.

This isn’t the only freebie from the orange folks. Be sure to check out Freshly Squeezed’s freeware page here.

That’s it for this week. I think we found something for everyone.

PIMp

How you keep your personal information is, well, personal. Take a look at these free solutions.

Equaling Entourage

Microsoft Entourage 2004 is a favorite PIM for Mac users, and is the only one that allows access to Exchange servers for OS X users. Or is it?

Ximian Evolution

Available to Panther users through Fink, this Linux PIM app repackaged for OS X provides a spitting-image replacement of Outlook. In fact, Evolution trumps Outlook with RSS feed integration. Via a plug-in, it can access an Exchange server.

KOrganizer

Another Fink package, this member of the Konquerer suite provides a more Entourage-like interface and also works on an Exchange server. This package is available to Jaguar users as well as Panther users.

mu PIMpCalendar

Getting back to native apps, this free app incorporates mail, calendaring and contact management. What I can’t figure out is the icon.

mu PIMpCheck Off

Panther users: keep your tasks in the menu bar for easy access. This drop-down list will keep you on top of your to-do’s.

Nice? Now get yourself organized…
