Odds and Ends

This week we have a random bunch of freeware designed to tweak preferences and clean up corruption.

IPMenu is a spiffy little menu item that tells you your current IP address. This is especially handy for people with dynamically assigned IPs. This app includes both your local and external IP.

Return Receipt

Use the “request return receipt” header in your email? Be a pal and use this script to have Entourage do the same for people who email you. This script, which only works for Entourage X, requires Jaguar or later.

Safari2Yahoo

Swap Google search for Yahoo! search with this script. To make the switch the script requires Panther and Safari 1.2.

Check Preference Files and PrefBoy

These two utilities help you review and weed out corrupt preference files. Check Preference Files utilizes a terminal command to get the job done. PrefBoy requires Tcl/TK Aqua, and is a script.

Font Cache Cleaner

While you’re cleaning up corruption on your Mac, spread the fear to your fonts. This utility will clean up your fonts by cleaning up the cache.

Secure Transfers

We all know the Internet is rife with menacing threats, so why send your username and password through it unprotected? Too often we assume that good old FTP is safe. What we don’t realize is that – particularly on others’ unprotected wireless networks – your login credentials pass through unprotected.

mu Secure Transfers Fetch

Fetch has been transferring files to and from Macs for almost as long as the FTP protocol has been around. You’ll be happy to know, the running dog is getting an update to version 5. This limited release beta improves the interface, and introduces support for SFTP, a secure FTP protocol.

fetch2 Secure Transfers

If you’ve not already been accepted to the limited beta test, you’ll have to wait to get your hands on this FTP client. Fetch 4 is free to academic users, and cheap to the rest of us. No pricing has been announced for version 5.

mu Secure Transfers Cyberduck

Now, for a beta you can use today, there’s Cyberduck. This beta release also supports SFTP. The Open Source FTP client requires Panther and sports a clean interface and server bookmarking. Cyberduck brought home a 4 mouse rating from Macworld, pretty good for a free application.

mu Secure Transfers Fugu

While Fetch came to us from Dartmouth College, the University of Michigan has an excellent free file transfer solution. We’ve recently looked at Fugu, but it’s worth mentioning again while we’re on the subject of secure file transfer. Fugu does SFTP via SSH encryption.

mu Secure Transfers Make the Connection

If the terminal is more your style, you’ll want this straightforward collection of AppleScripts to connect to Telnet, SSH, FTP and SFTP servers via the Terminal. This one should work on any flavor of OS X.

There you go. Whatever your client may be, now you can send those data packets out with confidence.

Split and Clip

This week I’ve got a collection of fresh file splitting (and recombining) utilities as well as a couple clipboard utilities.

mu Split and Clip AudioSlicer

This free app splits MP3′s to your specifications. AudioSlicer even previews the cuts for you. This one requires Panther.

mu Split and Clip DMGscissor

Use this app to cut up large DMG files into more manageable bits. The best part is that, once reunited, the finder can reassemble the pieces. This app works with all versions of OS X.

mu Split and Clip Split&Concat

Split&Concat is a gui interface to a unix command to break up and reassemble files. Very nice. This one works on Jaguar and better.

mu Split and Clip Plain Clip

This faceless utility strips the clipboard text of all formatting. It can be activated with a hot key and works on 10.1 and better.

mu Split and Clip Smart Clipboard

Preview and navigate an unlimited number of clipboards. Now that’s a smart clipboard.
