Maximizing Studio MX

Yes, congrats to Macromedia on selling 250,00 copies of Studio MX. For those of you lucky dogs who have it, today’s downloads will make sure you’re getting the most from it. I also have something for those of you who don’t have it yet.

Studio MX

That’s right, our first free download for Studio MX IS Studio MX. Though only free for 30 days, that is one heck of a deal. With the incredible tools in MX, you ought to be able to make enough from your first project to buy it. Also, if you are a student, you can get Studio MX for the obscenely low price of $199.

Flash Player 6r60

Be sure you’re using the latest version of the Flash plugin. What difference there is between 6r58 and 6r60 I couldn’t tell you. But hey, it’s free, right?

Macromedia Extension Manager

If you have Studio MX, then the free Extension Manager is your window to the outside world. Macromedia’s Exchange is one of the most useful user communities you will ever be a part of. This site hosts hundreds of extensions for Dreamweaver and Flash. Using these extensions can expand the capability of Studio MX and save you hours of tedious programming.

So, just because you plunk down a wad on Studio MX does not mean you can’t enjoy the freebies too. And, if you don’t have Studio MX, you can download it and live a month of the good life for free.

Do-It-Yourself .Mac

Feeling left out of the .Mac club? $99 more than you care to plunk down on
Internet services? In true Freeloader fashion, I have a bargain alternative.

Actually, two. We will cover some free software and services that will put
you on near equal footing with dot-mac-ers, but first we’ll need to make a
small investment on web space.

This is one thing I won’t go free on – because every free host I have tried
either bombards you with ads or is nowhere near reliable. For web presence,
I have two plans:

Brown Bag

Sure the kids make fun of you, until they see what kind of bike you ride
home. My extreme bargain plan gives you dependable, 25 megabyte site with
MS11. The hosting is free after a one-time set-up fee of $11. There are no more charges or ads, plus you get unlimited bandwidth and FTP access. Online support
is free and reliability is very good.

School Lunch

For those of you that are willing to pay a little more for style, get your
own domain and free hosting from DotEasy. You’ll get 20 megabytes of web
space and 10 email accounts at your domain, all for $29.95 (yearly with no monthly fees) which includes
domain registration.

The Free Stuff

Now, we won’t be able to match .Mac feature-for-feature, but we’ll come
close.

First, you’ll need to set up iCal to publish your calendar to your FTP site.
Both of the above provide full FTP access. With your calendar online, others
will be able to subscribe to it on your web server. If you want to publish
your iCal in HTML, you can join iCal World and host it there for free or
convert it on your Mac with iCal2html.

Next, lets get your bookmarks and contacts on your site. Since IfThen
discontinued My Favorites Martian, I have yet to find a good bookmark or
address syncing application. Netscape does allow you to sync contacts
between computers in their address book, if you like. Instead we’ll use
HTMLize Address Book and Safari2HTML to turn our Address Book and Safari bookmarks into
HTML.

If you chose School Lunch, you have your email taken care of. If you opted
for Brown Bag, you’ll need to find a free email provider. With httpmail plugin you
can send and receive from a free Hotmail account from Mail.app.

.Mac also offers online photo albums. Because images eat p space, we’ll
store ours with Webshots for free and link to our albums from our site.

Finally, the iDisk. This is one category where I can’t compete. I didn’t
find any online back-up services worth anything. If you want to back-up
files online, then you’ll have to spring for the real thing.

With all this traffic going to your FTP, you’ll want quick access to it. Use
AutomountMaker to mount your FTP space like an extra drive when you log in. FTP
support in the Finder is a little funky at times, be you can’t beat the
convenience.

So, thanks to bargain hosting and some free services and utilities we have a
nice pair of poor-man solutions comparable to .Mac. Not perfect, but for
just over a tenth or under a third the price, it’s not bad.

Poor Mans Creative Suite

Fortunately we live in an age when you don’t have to plunk down a month’s rent to get quality design applications. Check out my picks for free web and graphic design.

mu Poor Mans Creative SuiteGIMPshop

We know that GIMP is the free graphic design solution. This incarnation on GIMP has an interface that has been rearranged to more closely match Photoshop’s. It’s a convenient layout and a great example of the benefits of Open Source development.

mu Poor Mans Creative SuiteSeashore

Here’s another raster image editor that steals from GIMP.Written in Cocoa, it shares GIMP’s native file format.

seashore Poor Mans Creative Suite

Seashore supports an array of file formats and includes all the basic tools (gradient, stroke etc.). It is not as full featured as GIMP, but useful for users of the Photoshop’s core tools.

mu Poor Mans Creative SuiteExpression

Here’s a bizarre but good deal. Expression, according to MacUpdate, is a Microsoft application. The about box credits Creature House.

expression Poor Mans Creative Suite

Who’s ever it was or is, it is also a tidy vector illustration program. Its feature set is probably comparable with Illustrator 7 or 8, but it covers the core functions well.

mu Poor Mans Creative SuiteNvu

Nvu stands for anything but “Not Very Useful”. This Gecko-powered HTML editor and web site manager has matured to 1.0 status with improved Mac support and Dreamweaver-like features.

nvu Poor Mans Creative Suite

Edit web pages and publish them directly to your FTP site. Built-in tools like HTML Validator, Markup cleaner and CSS Editor make it a contender to commercial solutions.

With the increasing quality and power of free applications, you can now rely on freeware – even for pro quality work. How’s that for lowering overhead.
