Loving Litho and strung out on CandyBar

litho 20071218 204526 Loving Litho and strung out on CandyBarPanic Software’s CandyBar has only been out for a few weeks, maybe a month, and I have to say I’m hooked. I love being able to give my System icons a new look. I have even moved my Leopard Dock from the right side of the screen back to the default position at the bottom in order to enjoy the custom Docks that come packaged in many of the iContainers available at the Iconfactory.

Feeding the addiction to System makeovers is the work the artists at Iconfactory have been hard at making their pre-Leopard sets enabled with 512 pixel resolution icons and custom Docks. The latest of these is Anthony Piraino’s Litho System. The perfect combination of bright colors and weathered shapes, Litho is making my System beautiful.

Litho System is free to download. CandyBar sells for USD$29.

DragThing 5.8.1 adds snazzy new dock theme and fixes a bunch or problems

DockTheme18 20070531 201041 DragThing 5.8.1 adds snazzy new dock theme and fixes a bunch or problemsThe new version of DragThing, the popular file launcher, brings the program up to version 5.8.1.

In addition to the snazzy new “Dashboard” dock theme by Martin Harding, this update brings the ability to lock the position of docks and fixes problems with drawers not always opening, “Toggle Dock Hiding” hot spot not always hiding docks, DragThing not always quitting when sounds are switched on, problems with renaming docks and running the “Dock Test” AppleScript.

This is a free upgrade for existing registered users of DragThing 5. Otherwise it costs USD$12 for registered users of DragThing 2 and 4, and USD$29 for new users. Five and ten-packs are also available at USD$99 and USD$149 respectively.

Newlaunches lists 10 Apple flops… but wait, maybe it’s just one

A recent post to Newlaunches.com entitled Top 10 Apple products which flopped gives the run down on some products Apple might like to forget. It is interesting to note that 8 of the 10 (namely Apple Cyberdog, Taligent, Apple EWorld, Apple Pippin, the 20th Anniversary Macintosh, Macintosh TV, Macintosh Portable and Apple Newton) were developed in the dark period when Steve Jobs was not at the helm. Also important to note is that the Motorola ROKR is not an Apple flop, it’s a Motorola flop–Apple merely licensed iTunes to Motorola for use on the ROKR. This leaves the Apple Lisa, a computer whose development was stunted by Apple’s focus on the Macintosh.

Once you eliminate the products that were produced by a very different Apple (and one product that was produced by Motorola), you are left promoting the device that currently holds the position of “honorable mention” on Newlaunches’ list to the top of the dung heap: the Apple Puck Mouse.

The Apple Puck Mouse truly sucked!
