Alternative iChat status icons. A la .Mac without the .Mac.

A la .Mac without the .Mac.If you use iChat a lot to chat with your Mac lovin’ friends, you may have noticed the proliferation lately of a certain style of iChat icon (aka “avatar”). In mid-March, Apple released 11 sets of icons to its .Mac subscribers and possibly the most popular of these sets consisted of some round cornered, squares with blended colors expressing simple status messages.

Having downloaded this set myself, I quickly found that its 9 icons didn’t really fit in with my lifestyle. For instance, I don’t go to the gym so much, and when I go OOTO (Out Of The Office) it rarely if ever requires the use of a plane as depicted on the icon. No, I needed my own set.

After creating this set for myself, I started getting pings from my iChat peeps asking where I got these icons. Soon I was making new ones just for my friends and online acquaintances. It soon became apparent that I should really be offering this set up to the masses, the Mac web and, specifically, you ‘Mercs. So, here they are. Download ‘em and drag them into that iChat icon receptacle next to your name in the Buddy List. Enjoy.

Museums turning to iPods to save cost

Small museums are taking advantage of the proliferation of iPods to reduce audio tour production costs. According to Bowdoin College’s Campus News the Peary-MacMillan Arctic Museum has created a podcast of its latest exhibit on the Inughuit people of Northwest Greenland, allowing visitors to hear Arctic winds, Greenlandic dog teams, and people speaking, singing, and playing sealskin drums. Visitors can use their own iPods or borrow one from the reception desk, free of charge.
