Machinist posts ”the final word” on the ”Macs are more expensive” debate

Farhad Manjoo at Machinist has posted this rather juicy piece of flamebait entitled “Once and for all, proof that Macs are cheaper than PCs” in which he (?) declares the Mac platform as the clear winner in the Mac vs PC war. Farhad contests the notion that Macs are the BMW of computers but asserts that they in fact the Ford of computers–the computer for the everyman. He says:

Even though you may pay a slight premium at the cash register for a Mac over a comparable Windows PC (a premium that gets slighter all the time), it will cost you less money — real, honest-to-goodness American dollars — to own that Mac than to own that PC.

This is not going to come as a surprise to the readers of MacMerc; we know. But, he’s not talking about the cost of IT time to rid your machine of viruses. He’s not claiming that Macs save you money on downtime. No, we’ve heard that all before but he’s got another angle–resale, baby! If you’ve ever tried to buy a Mac on eBay, you know; Macs keep more of their value for resale. And Mac users don’t often take their obsolete machines to the curb; they repurpose them, making them rarer and more valuable.

Check out Farhad’s article and see how much you saved by going Mac.

MacZOT.com to sell 13 Mac apps for $13 on Friday the 13th, with a catch

maczot 20070412 203726 MacZOT.com to sell 13 Mac apps for $13 on Friday the 13th, with a catchIn an effort to dispell the unlucky myths surrounding Friday the 13th, MacZOT.com has announced that on this Friday the 13th, for 24 hours beginning at 12:00am PT, they will offer thirteen Mac applications for a total price of USD$13.00.

What’s the catch?

“Most people who hear about this will be unlucky (proof of the myth) because the offer will only be good for a total of thirteen minutes of the entire day,” says founder, Brian Ball. The few who are able to purchase the bundle will likely refute the myth, since getting a bundle of Mac software valued at over USD$300 is certainly not unlucky.
