Jingle Bells and Whistles for your Mac

Has your Mac been good this year? Then reward it with some new software. I have collected a stockings-worth of handy freeware that should make your Internet time more effective.

Searchling 1.1b

There are good ideas, and then there are great ones. This little menu bar application lets you initiate searches to Google, Ebay, MacUpdate and more right from your menu. If you’re brave enough to dig into the code, you can add any site you like.

LifTP

This frequently updated FTP client is still in early development. Its “iApp” style brushed metal interface is appealing, as are its options. Quite a handy FTP client, it gets the job done nicely. Best of all, itís free and Fetch isnít.

TNEFís Enough

Ever received an email with a mysterious winmail.dat attachment? These encoded attachments are the product of Mac-loathing Outlook clients. TNEFís Enough is a small application that extracts anything meaningful from the winmail.dat file. Very useful if you receive frequent email from Win-Dosers. This one comes in Carbon, FAT and 68k flavors.

the Sights and Sounds of Free

From instant image editing to professional audio editing, these freeware apps put you in control of your work.

Audacity

From our friends in the open-source world comes a great multi-track audio editor that supports professional standards. Audacity is a must-have for sound work and even has its own set of effects. More than I expected from a free program.

imagewell

Following along with the trend of exceeding expectations, there’s imagewell. This menu extra edits, resizes and converts images right off the clipboard. Not only that, it uploads images to iDisks or FTP sites and allows easy reshaping and annotating of those images. Cool stuff.

ClipboardSharing

Sticking around on the menu bar we find another useful utility. ClipboardSharing does just what it says – allows you to share clipboards with other Mac users on your Rendezvous network. It also gives you access to previous clipboards, making it useful on Macs going solo as well.

That should keep you busy this afternoon. Join me next week for more great free deals.

Backup and Browse

With this week’s picks, you can quickly backup files and enhance your Safari or Camino browsing experience.

mu Backup and BrowseiPodBackup

This application uses rsync to backup your home folder to your iPod. Options let you choose what you want to backup or leave behind.

mu Backup and BrowseEmailDisk

Send files right to your email through drag and drop. This configurable script makes it easy to backup to email.

mu Backup and BrowseSafariSource

Color code the source in Safari’s “view source”. Handy for code moochers. Requires Panther.

mu Backup and BrowseCamino ExtraPrefs

Enable ad blocking, add search engines to the toolbar search box and more with this preference-enabler.

Now I think you can get into all kinds of trouble in hidden prefs and other people’s code. Don’t forget to back it up either.
