Yazsoft has announced the availability of Speed Download 5. The company claims this new version is a complete overhaul that combines a turbo-charged download auto-resuming manager, a fully featured secure FTP client, a file sharing utility with full encryption, and complete .Mac/iDisk/WEBDAV connectivity.
According to the press release,
everyone who purchased Speed Download 4 between Jan 1, 2008 and Feb 12, 2008, may upgrade to SD 5 for FREE. Speed Download 5 can be purchased from the Yazsoft web site for USD$25 for a single user license.
This is where things have gotten sticky. Do you remember that MacHeist bundle that was on sale at the beginning of the year? And by “beginning of the year” I mean between Jan 1, 2008 and Feb 12, 2008. Does that ring a bell? Speed Download 4 was one of the dozen or so applications included in that bundle. Thus, anyone buying the MacHeist bundle should be entitled to a FREE upgrade, right? Well, not according to Yazsoft. In the comments section under Speed Download on MacUpdate, the developer has written,
The update window that shows up clearly says at the very top that ‘Speed Download 5 is a paid upgrade’. We put it at the top specifically so that it’s the first thing people see. It’s also everywhere on our website.
As for the complaints from MacHeist users, I believe the confusion comes from an incorrect and potentially misleading note on the MacHeist website with regards to Speed Download. They state that all ‘UPGRADES’ are free. That was never quoted by us. As always, all ‘UPDATES’ are free.
Regardless, we are offering all MacHeist users the possibility to upgrade to SD5 at reduced pricing.
Hope that helps answer any questions and concerns.
Clearly, the questions and concerns continue. The MacHeist forums are ablaze and users are outraged. To me it seems quite simple: the press release states the bracket of dates within which the previous version of the product was required to be purchased in order for the user to be entitled to a FREE upgrade. The MacHeist bundle purchases were well within this bracket and thus they are entitled to Speed Download 5.
