What got the Software Update icon jumping this week, and what does it mean?

Apple issued a handful of updates via the Software Update conduit this week. Here is a brief rundown on what we got:

Garage Band 4.1.1: improves overall stability and addresses issues with file export to iPhone. Issues with file export to iPhone? Oh, you mean we can create custom ringtones in Garage Band now? The iLounge’s Jeremy Horwitz is all over that!

Faronics Deep Freeze 4.0 is ready for Leopard

deepfreeze 20071024 201758 Faronics Deep Freeze 4.0 is ready for LeopardIn anticipation of the release of Mac OS X 10.5 “Leopard”, Faronics has announced that a new version of its Deep Freeze Mac security software is now available. Version 4.0 of Deep Freeze Mac offers several product improvements, support for Leopard, multiple Maintenance schedules, and the highly-anticipated Integrated Mapping feature.

The showcase feature in the new Deep Freeze Mac 4.0 is Integrated Mapping, which makes saving user data while still protecting the system software simple. IT administrators are able to map user accounts individually or by user type to a second partition or Thawspace to retain user documents, pictures, movies, music, and bookmarks.

IT administrators of large Mac deployments are already familiar with Deep Freeze Mac’s ability to protect a workstation’s operating system and software without restricting user access. Mac users who are protected by Deep Freeze’s ‘reboot-to-restore’ concept are able to enjoy a clean and consistent Mac session–each and every time. IT administrators love the fact that Mac environments are easier to manage and expensive computer assets are kept running at 100% capacity. Unlike imaging technology, Deep Freeze Mac’s ‘reboot-to-restore’ process does not increase bootup times or impact system resources whatsoever.

A free, fully functional 30-day evaluation version of Deep Freeze Mac is available. Deep Freeze Mac also offers enterprise capabilities via its integration with Apple Remote Desktop.

Intego announces public beta of FileGuard X4, a new data protection program

fg general 20070724 040357 Intego announces public beta of FileGuard X4, a new data protection programIntego has announced the public beta release of its new FileGuard X4 data protection program. FileGuard X4 creates virtual safes that provide unbreakable protection for sensitive files. Users can create as many safes as they need for different types of files; send sensitive files to others with “no risk” and store safes on servers or external disks with “full security”.

FileGuard X4 is intended to meet the needs of mobile users who have sensitive files on their laptops, as well as home and business users who want to ensure that their confidential data is protected. Unlike Apple’s FileVault, which requires that users encrypt their entire home folder, FileGuard X4 lets users choose which files or folders they want to protect, and only the ones they want to protect. FileGuard X4′s virtual safes are easy-to-use, practical, and flexible, offering many options, such as permissions for shared access, simple drag-and-drop copying to and from safes, and unbreakable encryption.

As with any beta software, users of FileGuard X4 run the risk of discovering bugs in the application. Using software that is intended to envelope your data in an unbreakable, encrypted “safe” is especially dangerous as application may concievably malfunction in a way that prevents you from retrieving your files. Please backup you data before testing any beta software.

Features of FileGuard X4:

  • Store sensitive files in secure virtual safes
  • Industry-standard encryption makes safes unbreakable
  • Create as many safes as you need
  • Set a different password for each safe
  • Create safes by drag-and-drop, or from the Intego menu
  • Safes increase in capacity as you add more files
  • Change the size of a safe or compress it to save space
  • Open safes by a simple double-click in the Finder
  • Protect sensitive files on laptops in case of loss or theft
  • Protect files on portable media, such as iPods or USB key drives
  • Safes work like folders – drag files to and from your safes
  • Safe icons indicate their status (open or closed)
  • Use floating windows to access safes at all times
  • Send safes by e-mail, or store them on servers or external disks
  • Set read and write permissions for safes stored on shared volumes

FileGuard X4 requires Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) or higher and 20 MB hard disk space.
