A look at the Tom Bihn ID Messenger Bag

This may come as a total shock to you all, but I am into gadgets. I also like bringing with me every gizmo that I might possibly need when I go out. I’ve got my SwissTool, my iKlear, my zip ties and my FlyLight. My cell phone, my camera, my mouse pad and my iSight. For the last 6 months I’ve been toting around all that, my iBook and quite a bit more in my Willow PK-02: Thoreau Backpack and in those 6 months I have developed some considerable back pain from all that gadgetry.

Inspired to downsize

blueID A look at the Tom Bihn ID Messenger Bag Out of the blue came the Tom
Bihn ID Mid-sized Messenger Bag
. I went through a bit of inner conflict
as I came to the realization that all the gak I used to carry in my Thoreau
simply would not fit in the ID. Don’t misunderstand me: the ID has plenty
of room for any normal human being with a healthy outlook on what one
should be expected to keep with them at all times. It’s just that, with
the Thoreau,
I was able to keep all the necessary tools for every eventuality packed
and ready, with the ID I am forced to pack only for the anticipated events
of the day. An exercise I was greatly in need of actually.

About the bag

The Tom Bihn ID Bag is a messenger style bag, meaning that it has a single
strap that is meant to cross you chest like a sling rather than the customary
shoulder straps of a backpack.

essential gadgets of the day ahead. On the flap itself is a rather large
pocket with a waterproof zipper. The main cargo bay of the ID has snaps
for an optional, and highly recommended, Brain
Cell laptop sleeve
. The Brain Cell is designed to cradle you ‘Book
and absorb some of the shock it might encounter on the road. The flat
pocket on the back of this bag is the perfect size for documents.

bag in place as you where it while riding or running for a train. Provision
has been made to allow for a Cat Eye flasher to be attached to the bag
for extra visibility by motorists at night and Tom Bihn has made the ID
available in several eye catching colors that will you similar attention
during day rides.

Pros and Cons

I really like the size of the ID and although it won’t hold all my iBook accessories
it is sufficient to hold the ones I’m likely to use in a single outing. It is
also very strong, well constructed and light. Gotta like that.

I really like the waist strap because it gives me an added sense of security
to know that anyone who might try to run by and snatch my ‘Book is gonna have
to take me along with it.

The Brain Cell add-on is a nice touch and keeps you ‘Book safe from your other
items while still leaving it accessible.

On the downside, I wish there were some divisions made in the main cargo area.
The organizer in the front of the bag is great but it would be nice to have
similar features inside that accommodated the larger items I carry. And while
Tom Bihn never specifically marketed this bag to wardrivers, being as this is
the Wardriver Wednesday column I don’t feel that it is totally inappropriate
to mention that the bag is not quite big enough to tote an iBook or PowerBook
and a Pringles
Can Antenna
óyou are likely to crush your can if you try.

More info

According to their web site. the Tom
Bihn ID Mid-sized Messenger Bag
is available in sizes to fit 12″ and
15″ PowerBooks and and the 12″ iBooks. It evidently is too small for
the 17″ PowerBook and 14″ iBook is uncomfortable positioned between
the 12″ and 15″ sizes.

All things considered, I must say that the Tom
Bihn ID Messenger Bag
is my favorite of the multitude of bags I’ve tried.

iLugger

blue w500 20080725 192738 iLuggerUsually iMacs are not portable computers, but now, thanks to the iLugger Backpack they are. The iLugger is a sturdy backpack fitted for either the 17″, 20″ or 24″ iMacs with room for accessories such as a keyboard or mouse. Despite the way people are bound to look at you if you wear this on the street, the iLugger claims to provide a practical solution for people who need to transport an iMac.

There are obvious quirks to carrying a desktop computer on your back considering that the iMac, though thin and sleek, is not designed to be lightweight. At about 20 pounds, this is a heavy load to carry on your back and I would have appreciated more padding and more comfortable straps to accommodate the load.

Overall, the iLugger does what it claims to do and that is simply to make the iMac portable. Though, I do not agree with the claims of the iLugger making the iMac into a portable computer, because the fact is that 20 pounds is 20 pounds regardless of whether or not its in a backpack.

I was asked to do some durability and functionality testing on the iLugger, here are some interesting issues about it you might want to know;

  • The actual bag is very durable, I was not able to get it to tear. To find its tear point, I stuck a knife into the back. And only after a lot of jabbing, I was able to make a small whole.
  • The backpack straps are poorly designed, and poorly constructed. They run diagonally from a few inches below the top of the iLugger to its bottom.
  • The iLugger is too lightly padded and the poorly designed straps make the load feel even heavier.
  • The clips for connecting the removable backpack straps to the case are made of plastic and, during testing, one broke and then popped out while the case was on my back. Imagine this happening while your iMac was inside!
  • The shoulder strap is also poorly padded and I found it next to impossible to carry the iLugger with an iMac inside for more than 20 minutes. I found my neck began to ache.

Overall I was not very impressed with the iLugger. Though a good idea, it has been poorly executed.

WaterField Designs Sleevecase

prodsleevecasedetail7og0 1 20080513 193432 WaterField Designs SleevecaseThe SleeveCase is an excellent computer case, made by WaterField Designs, and available in many configurations including over 40 different sizes, either vertical or horizontal, with a flap or without, 3 different strap options, and an additional pouch to hold accessories.

I tested the Sleevecase in the vertical orientation with the flap, Suspension Strap and the PiggyBack (the pouch). When it arrived, I slipped my MacBook Pro into it, and that’s when I realized how amazing of a product it is. For under USD$100 you get an amazing case which protects the MacBook Pro very well and is very comfortable to carry around.

The quality of the case is fantastic. I carefully looked it over, and I did not even see one loose thread on it. The Sleevecase appears as if it was made to perfection, and in my testing, it was perfect. The PiggyBack is an ideal size to hold the MagSafe power adapter, a wireless mouse, and my DVI to VGA adapter when traveling, and it is made to the same standard as the Sleevecase.

The Sleevecase is made from neoprene on the inside for great protection of your valuable laptop, and nylon on the outside. It uses Velcro to keep the flap shut, while still protecting the laptop.

From a design point of view, it is also wonderful, both in looks and functionality. I had a compliment from an Apple Employee when I visited the Apple Store with my MacBook Pro in this case. It goes along with the Apple laptops perfectly. The Suspension Strap makes carrying around my 6.8 pound laptop easy and comfortable.

This is truly the best case I have ever tested, from a functionality, design, comfort and price perspective. For under USD$100, it is a great buy. I highly recommend it to everyone who has an Apple laptop.
