Dial back your iPhone 3G or 3GS to a previous iOS

As mentioned before, iOS 4.0 on the 3G iPhone is not awesome—it’s slow, over heated, quickly drains the battery and is generally unstable. And though Apple is apparently aware of the problems and is working on fixing the situation, the rest of us need to get stuff done in the meantime.

My friend, Mike Bjorndal ( @mbjorndal ) pointed me to this iHackintosh article that allowed me to put my iPhone in DFU mode, restore an older firmware and boot back out of DFU mode again. After restoring my apps and settings in iTunes, I was back in business with a faster 3G iPhone experience running an older firmware.

Keep in mind, many of the apps you may be running now might require iOS 4.x and will be inaccessible from an older version of the OS. I take no responsibility for any lost data. Backup and then backup again…and then reconsider doing this hack.

Finding Stuff

This week, we’ll look at free software that reveals hidden files and a wealth of information on the Internet.

mu Finding StuffInVisibles

Make your invisible files visible with a double-click. This application gives you useful (but potentially dangerous) power over the underpinnings of the OS.

mu Finding StuffiWiki

Search the Wikipedia, one of the largest free collections of information from your menubar.

mu Finding StuffMrClean

Search your hard drive for duplicate files and delete them. This free application compares files on a number of criteria, allowing you to identify and get rid of useless duplicates.

mu Finding Stuffdelicious2safari

Access your del.icio.us bookmarks in Safari, with multiple options for organizing them.

I hope you’ve found something useful in this week’s bunch of freeware. If not, keep looking and I’ll meet you back here next week.

Scary Stuff– Zombies and Vampires in Photoshop

zombieIT 4 20071229 150642 Scary Stuff Zombies and Vampires in PhotoshopThis is kind of the Nightmare After Christmas, I guess. Scary Stuff: Zombies and Vampires in Photoshop is a segment I did for The Lab with Leo Laporte where I turned Lab cast member Sean Carruthers into a brain eating zombie and a blood sucking vampire–all using Photoshop’s Liquify filter and a few Adjustment Layers.

Don’t be scared, come check it out.
