mainscreen 20080522 200442 aTV Flash Apple TV hack updatedIf you’re one of those people who has the minerals to install non-Apple software on his Apple TV, you may be interested to know that the USD$59.95 aTV Flash USB drive has been upgraded to version 2.2 .

aTV Flash allows your Apple TV to…

  • Play most video formats (DivX, Xvid, AVI, WMV, RMVB + more)

  • Play DVD files WITHOUT converting them
  • Sync, organize and watch non-iTunes video files
  • Browse the web with a Safari based web browser
  • Rent & watch Hi-Def movies from Jaman.com
  • Stream media from UPnP(v1) media servers
  • View local weather forecasts
  • View RSS Feeds
  • Enable SSH access

It’s able to do all this without messing with the original Apple TV code or making it necessary to void your warranty. Maybe you don’t need that many minerals after all.

Apple TV 2.0.1 update and how to take advantage of it

moviegenres 20080330 194046 Apple TV 2.0.1 update and how to take advantage of itFriday, Apple snuck out an update to the Apple TV that adds Genre sorting to your My Movies menu.

Sorting TV shows by show has allowed Apple TV users to easily navigate to the specific episode of the specific show they wanted to play by allowing them to drill down to just the show they were concerned with. Sorting through a long list of movies in My Movies wasn’t so easy; all your movies were all in one scrolling list with no way to organize them. That has changed with the Apple TV 2.0.1 update.

To update your Apple TV, go to General under the Settings menu and scroll down and click on Update Software. After the update is complete (your Apple TV will need to restart), you will be able to show your movies in the long list or by genre.

To organize your movies, you will need to make sure they have been appropriately label by genre. Open iTunes, select your Movies library and select your first movie. Under the File menu, choose Get Info… and, on the window that pops up, click the “Info” tab. Now you will see several fields in which you can clarify information about the selected movie. Direct your attention to the Genre field in the lower left. Fill in the genre of the movie you selected and then click the “Next” button beneath the Genre field. This will switch the window to show information for the next movie in your Movies library list. Set its genre. Continue in this manner until all your movies have been categorized by genre and then click “OK” in the lower right of the window. The next time you sync your iTunes Movie library with your Apple TV, your movies will be viewable by genre and much, much easier to navigate.

Enjoy.
