Free RSS Services

This week we’ve got some useful, and of course free RSS services.

Bloglines

Upload your blogroll (as an OPML) or enter your favorite feeds manually to track your subscriptions from any internet connection. Bloglines even has a desktop client that alerts you when your feeds are updated. It might be the most pleasant way to stay on top of the news on a PC.

Feedster

Here’s another online service that can handle your blogroll. Feedster also has an RSS search engine that will let you sift through a top of new feeds.

FeedBurner

This free service, still in alpha, will let you jazz up your news feeds. It reads your existing feed, enhances it and hosts it. FeedBurner takes the traffic burden off your site and gives you additional statistics and features.

FeedValidator

The ‘net is full of outlaws, but when it comes to XML formats, you don’t want to find yourself on the wrong side of the standard. Proof your feed’s compliance and troubleshoot errors with the FeedValidator

With these tools you can once again command control of your email. Have fun.

Video Browsing

The ‘net is crawling with video. After waiting years for broadband and content, we can now enjoy everything from ABC to Rocket Boom news, from iFilm to YouTube.

There’s also a fledgling offshoot of the podcast phenomena in Vlogging. It should be no surprise that there’s a great Open Source application for tracking and watching Vlogs. In addition to iTunes, there’s another slick and free alternative.

Browsers/Viewers

Democracy

The Democracy player (formerly known as DTV) is a QuickTime 7 based viewer and aggreggator. Democracy has tools for creating your own “channel” and has a built-in search feature for finding more video.

democracy Video Browsing

The player’s interface is slick. The guide boasts 300 +channels. Be prepared for large files, though, and long downloads.

FireANT

This player/aggregator also has built in search and directory. FireANT has a trimmer interface and is a step ahead in its support of portable devices and BitTorrent support.

fireant Video Browsing

FireANT’s search takes you to a built-in browser, and it supports a wide range of formats. Downloading is easy, though you can’t schedule downloads like you can in Democracy.

Getting Video off the Web

Once again, Firefox is our tool for tweaking the web. The following are extensions that let you get at embedded video.

VideoDownloader

This extension lets you grab embedded video from a ton of sites. It lives in your status bar, and can also be used from the site itself for browsers not supporting extensions.

Download Embeded

This extension does not rely on any given site’s structure. It looks for and lists downloadable embedded media.

There are the tools you’ll need to get on top of video on the internet.

foof revives the ”it’s not easy being green” foofbag to raise eco awareness

422707336 c196e9bf3d m foof revives the its not easy being green foofbag to raise eco awarenessThe fine folks at foof in Australia, who have been making unique protective fabric sleeves for Apple Macbook and Macbook Pro for years now, are re-introducing the “it’s not easy being green” — a vibrant green corduroy foofbag.
foof hopes the
“it’s not easy being green” foofbag will “bring more awareness to online customer purchasing decisions with regards to greenhouse gas offset (CO2 free) products. foof is a small business that is in the process of abating their greenhouse gas footprint that’s been created from emissions arising from the importing of materials, manufacturing and exporting of foofbags. To this end, foofbags are made of materials like Herringbone tweed from Ireland, traditional motif cottons from Japan and colourful corduroy from China in our foofbag products. As of this year, every foof product on sale is emissions offset (or abated) via forestry tree sequestration in NSW Australia. This is done through a carbon credit reseller, called CarbonPlanet.

Furthermore, foof will also contribute the full cost to plant and manage a tree for 100 years as apart of the purchase price of an “it’s not easy being green” foofbag. AUD$4 will go towards this sequestration program from each AUD$36 “it’s not easy being green” foofbag they sell this month and next month.

Buy a foofbag and feel good, buy a “it’s not easy being green” foofbag and feel even better.
