Bring out the Gimp

This week’s episode is another homage to free software. For starters, Gimp has arrived, courtesy of Aaron Voisine. But, the fight is not over. We’ll also look at a live battle for OS X compatibility, as we work to get a popular new P2P internet phone app made for Mac.

mu Bring out the GimpGimp.app

Between OpenOffice and Gimp, many argue there’s no need to pay hundreds for software. This version of Gimp comes packaged in an Aqua-like theme and packs new features. Today it works with Panther, Jaguar compatibility is on the way.

It is doubtful that Adobe sees this as a threat to Photoshop, which recently reeled in record profits for the company with its new CS version. Photoshop will likely out-feature Gimp for the foreseeable future.

But Gimp does bring an element of freedom to users who don’t yet have the free cash to own the best, and are happy for a free alternative. Free software opens doors, and the efforts of the many who contribute to the project are more than appreciated.

Upgrade your graphics power, or get yourself a powerful backup. Either way, Gimp is worth the download.

Skype

Peer to peer telephony is what they call it. A long-awaited, quality successor to DialPad is another way to describe Skype. But, with a Mac OS version mentioned only as a possibility, you may not even have a chance to try it out.

Thanks to Jack Arends for the heads up on this one. The coming of a Mac version of Skype my be in your hands. Send feedback to make sure the makers of Skype know that there is interest and you can help ensure that Skype comes to the best OS there is.

Doesn’t free software make the Mac OS a great place to be? More next week.

The Panther is Out

Mac OS X 10.3 Panter is upon us. There are upsides and downsides to any software update. Don’t get caught with incompatible software after you upgrade.

mu The Panther is OutSubRosasoft

Though panthers aren’t much of a threat in New Zealand, the folks at SubRosasoft are ready. Their main software lines have all been updated for OS 10.3, making them the first disk utility to declare compatibility that I am aware of.

mu The Panther is OutUnsanity

The makers of “haxies” have updated several of their popular OS tweaks for Panther, including SafariNoTimeout, Menu Extra Enabler and their Application Enhancer. These are must-downloads for anyone updating.

mu The Panther is OutTinkerTool

For the rest of you that can’t leave well enough alone, the hidden option enabler TinkerTool has been declared compatible with 10.3.

mu The Panther is OutCoolBackground

Keeping in the spirit of making Panther your own, CoolBackground is an OS 10.3 compatible application that turns your desktop background into a screensaver. Now you can show off that G5 and Quartz Extreme like never before.

Best of luck to those of you upgrading. Let’s hope Panther is a temperamental cat.

The slot loading iMac’s aren’t _officially_ obsolete until September 18

slotloader 20070728 121159 The slot loading iMacs arent officially obsolete until September 18Sure, with their measly 350 or 400MHz PowerPC processors, these machines haven’t been “cool” since the Y2K bug was still a lingering threat. But Apple has continued to offer service parts and documentation to authorized repair facilities all these years.

All that changes on September 18. On that date, Apple metaphorically pulls the plug on these machines, straps them to a steno chair with a pack of C4 explosives and shoves them down an open elevator shaft just like Bruce Willis did with that PC monitor in Die Hard. It’s over…finally… but they’re not alone… others will be officially pronounced “obsolete” on that date as well.

Here’s the list:

  • iMac 350 MHz
  • iMac 400 MHz DV
  • iMac 400 MHz DV (Special Edition)
  • Apple Cinema Display (1999-2000)
  • Apple Studio Display 15-inch DVI
  • Apple Studio Display 21
  • Airport Base Station (Graphite)
