Schubert-it Style

In all the time we spend downloading and using free software, we rarely or never take thought as to the work that went into it. We take for granted the code-junkies that sacrifice their lunch breaks and evenings to give us software we use everyday.

With that in mind, this week we’ll be taking a look at Manfred Schubert, the author of the one-and-only OS X PDF web browser plug-in appropriately called PDF Browser Plugin.

Manfred, who first started programming on a Commodore 64, maintains several software projects on his website. His first Mac was a PowerMac 6100. When asked what motivates him to author freeware he said simply, “It’s software I needed and programming is a lot of fun.”

Manfred’s shareware offerings include Vektor3, a slick OS X chess app and runner-up for a 2002 Apple Design Award, and Vanessa, an OS 9 chess game. Both are $10, available for download with a 30 trial period.

While Manfred discounts his free software as too simple to charge for, many users appreciate the gaps in functionality they bridge.

Along with PDF Browser Plug-in, you can download Video Viewer, a straightforward monitor for any QuickTime video input. As for the Browser Plugin, it has matured to version 1.1.1 and adds print external viewer options.

You can download all these goodies from Schubert-it.com. While Manfred does not solicit donations for his free software, grateful users could always invest in one of his chess games. Of course, for chess fans, they merit purchase on their own.

Thanks for joining me this week. If you have a free software author who you think deserves a feature here, let me know.

Regardless, join me next week for more great free software!

Inventive Releases iClip 3.5 Productivity Software for Mac OS X

New Version Features New Menu System, Persistent Clipboard Recorder, Improved Help

Inventive, Inc. announces the release of iClip version 3.5, their award winning productivity software for Mac OS X. iClip enables users to quickly store, organize, and access snippets of information without having to save them as entire documents.
Now available in iClip is a new menu system that moves the main iClip functions from the global menu to a set of menus directly within the iClip window, making it much more intuitive to use. The contents of the Clipboard Recorder are now automatically preserved through iClip relaunches and restarts, eliminating the need for users to explicitly store it before quitting. Also new in version 3.5 are significant improvements to iClip documentation, in that it now uses Apple’s Help Viewer application, making it easy to print and search.

“We took a hard look at where iClip usability could’ve been improved and I feel that the enhancements in version 3.5 accomplish much in that regard. I’m happy to say that the whole application is now much more Mac-like and smoother to use as a result,” said John Casasanta, President of Inventive.

iClip is a multiple clipboard/scrapbook application designed to improve user efficiency and productivity for various computing tasks. iClip enables users to store and retrieve various clippings, such as text, pictures, URLs, file aliases, movies, etc. in it’s multiple bins. Clippings can be arranged into groups to keep users organized. iClip helps eliminate redundant typing, especially in tasks like filling out online forms. It’s widely used to assist general purpose tasks such as word processing, web browsing, and research, while webmasters, graphic designers, and programmers also find iClip to be useful in their more specialized tasks.

Pricing and Availability
iClip 3.5 is available now for Mac OS X 10.2 or later as a “try-before-you-buy” download at http://inventive.us/iClip/ or on CD at select retailers. It can be purchased for $19.95 USD for the trial version or $29.95 USD for the CD version. The version 3.5 upgrade is free to registered users of any previous version.
